    Summary

Before he can stop himself, he picks up the phone. Every ring seems to last for eternity. Please, he thinks, be there, pick up, don’t be dead, don’t be gone…

    “Viktor?”

His heart jumps. Silco’s voice is muffled, sleep-thick, but oh so achingly familiar. He had not realised until now just how much he missed it.

“You do realise it is 2 o’clock in the morning?”

He tries to speak but no words come out. The guilt, perhaps, has stolen them.

    “Has something happened?”

“Papa,” he finally whispers. “Papa. Papa.” And then all of a sudden he is bawling his eyes out, horrible, heaving gasps and sobs torn from his throat, wracking his thin frame, and distantly he is embarrassed, but he cannot seem to make himself stop.

Worn down by the crushing weight of (not actually) unrequited love, workplace disputes, past trauma, and the existential dread that comes with being an overachiever in your twenties, Viktor finally breaks. Papa Silco comes to pick up the pieces.

Returning to his childhood home in Zaun for a long-overdue rest, Viktor must reckon with his past, his future, and the terrifying prospect of allowing himself to be loved and cared for.

    Summary

“I’m not going to hurt you.” Corin puts his hands up to indicate his surrender to the half-dead boy who can’t hold his knife right because he is shaking so hard. Corin idly wonders how much of the tremor is from fear and how much is from the cold; the boy is rather waifish and, more than that, soaking wet. He isn’t sure if the boy can even see him clearly–the left half of his face is covered in a thick coat of his own half-dried blood, and the eyelid on that side is swollen shut. The other eye, blue with an irritated red sclera, is darting around like the boy can’t quite locate him. His body, however, remains frozen–a fear response, or does he not have the strength to move any more? Corin reminds himself not to create false dichotomies—it’s probable that the boy is both exhausted and terrified.

After Vander’s betrayal, Singed finds Silco washed up on the riverbank, clinging to life. He nurses him back to health.

    Summary

The average life expectancy in the area of the sump where he grew up is forty-five years. It’s hard to know if that number comes from the high crime rate, the commonality of high-risk jobs, or the harshness of the environment. In all likelihood, it’s a combination of all three.

Silco turns fifty next year. He’s trying not to think about it.
