SPOILER WARNING: This is basically a prequel to Unwound/Lost Future, and spoils the game very thoroughly. If for some reason you need *my* recommendation to play this game unspoiled, I give it with enthusiasm.
CONTENT WARNING: This is a character study centered on Clive. There is paranoia; there are rants; there are the opportunities an employer may give you; there is trauma and the failure to process it; there is the unforgiving passage of time. Less-canon is the occasional swearing & alcohol consumption, which I’ve applied to Clive because, idk, it makes sense to me. I also play a little fast & loose with some of the worldbuilding (Who owns the cave? Who wants to own the cave? Where did The Family come from? Typical prequelly shit lol).
So kind of a big oof but not, I hope, entirely depressing. And not a very flattering/forgiving portrait of this character, though he is one of my favorites of all time.

In what is to be one of many times when he feels desperately lost, Clive latches onto one person who seems to have his whole life mapped out: Miles Edgeworth, prodigy and soon-to-be-prosecutor. Unfortunately, Miles' future plans do not involve Clive. But that's fine;* Clive can find himself in someone else. Or something else. Or somewhere else. Or--
*It's not fine. His attachment to Miles ran too fast and too deep, and Miles' sudden, silent departure felt just enough like a permanent loss to trigger the growth of Clive's wings: huge, unwieldy things which Miles does not share. So were his feelings unrequited? Are they soulmates or aren't they? Is this all just an enormous understanding? And would anyone's answer to any of these questions actually feel like "the truth"?
(Or: Semi-linear scenes from an AU where a person fledges wings only after they believe their soulmate lost to them.)

Summary
A mere month before the royal tour- in which the crown princess of Khura'in will visit each of the seven realms before she ascends to the throne- Nahyuta Sahdmadhi, royal regent, has a problem. The princess, already troublesome at the best of times, has become obsessed with tales of the Jackdaw- a notorious outlaw who has taken the realms by storm, his exploits inspiring an entire cottage industry of trashy penny dreaduls.
Still, so long as Nahyuta can keep the public from finding out that their future queen is a devoted fan of a violent vigilante- in fact, so long as he can avoid the topic of said vigilante altogether- everything should be perfectly fine.
Avoidance of the Jackdaw, however, is about to become nigh impossible.

It doesn’t matter. Flight takes practice. Flight takes specific muscle groups. Flight takes wings that aren’t milliseconds-old. Flight takes stability, wind conditions, knowledge. This is common sense. It is the explanation given to any young child who asks about why the wings Grandmother has don’t act like the wings that the gulls outside have.
Hershel doesn’t even consider for an instant the possibility that Randall might not have died at the bottom of that horrible crevasse.

Summary
Growing up is mostly unpleasant. Between getting grounded, skipping school, having your first kiss and then regretting it the next minute- it's a tale as old as time, and an inescapable facet of life. After all, everyone can relate to the struggles of childhood. Teenage angst is like the butter on the bread of puberty. Unmistakably, parts of getting older will just be painful, full of strife and rife with regrets.
And sometimes growing up involves running an illegal business, making enemies, fighting your friends, getting arrested, wondering why dad left you behind and why your mum keeps necking the cooking sherry when she thinks you aren't looking, and laughing about what a shit fucking joke this is all turning out to be. All that whilst being plunged into a mystery buried six feet below the town. You know. Normal childhood experiences.
You get the gist.
