she opens her eyes instead.
they’re dark. shining. wrecked.

the honesty of it hits him so hard he almost sways.
his forehead finally touches hers.
just barely.
the contact feels like electricity. like relief and agony all at once. he exhales shakily, forehead pressed to hers, eyes closed like it’s the only way to keep himself together.
annabeth doesn’t pull away.

annabeth didn’t notice. she crouched to retie one of her sneakers, muttering something under her breath about clarisse being “all talk,” then straightened, tightening the strap of her chestplate. the sun hit her face at just the right angle, lighting up the bronze undertones of her skin, making the sweat on her temple catch like flecks of gold.
percy’s chest squeezed.

i meant it as a joke. sharp, almost mocking. but the second it left my mouth, it hung between us, too loud, too raw, with the city burning around us and monsters screeching closer by the second.
annabeth turned, eyes flashing like steel, her breath coming hard, jaw clenched. i expected the retort. the withering look. i braced for it.
instead, she grabbed me.
