Summary
Typically, when Arthur publicly made a fool of himself, Merlin would seek out the one other person who found as much comfort in such an incident as he did, and they would spend the rest of the afternoon huddled together in fits of laughter.
However, when he had turned away to find Gwaine’s gaze in the crowd, he hadn’t expected to see fading traces of the divine in the knight’s eyes, that familiar stamp of gold Merlin felt burning like fire whenever he toyed with a spell. Gwaine, completely oblivious as those eyes stayed trained on Arthur’s damp figure on the grass. Unaware, as he usually was, of how he had made Merlin’s breath constrict and die in his lungs.
Merlin’s heart was still racing even now, and had been beating out a rhythm of Gwaine’s name and panicked semblances of prayers ever since he had witnessed that.

Summary
"Merlin!" called Gaius from outside Merlin's door. "Time for breakfa--" He opened the door and stopped abruptly.
"Um," said Merlin, fidgeting.
"No. Whatever you have in mind, the answer is no," said Gaius sharply. His eyes drifted down Merlin's body, then jerked firmly up again.
Merlin smoothed down his skirts nervously. He must've gotten shorter by at least a foot, because his eyes were right in line with Gaius' disapproving eyebrow.

But events overtake them. This isn't set at a particular timepoint, but it's after Moist is introduced. I'm rather lax with authenticity over the timeline and people's exact ages; I don't see it as hugely important for this.

Summary
After years of increasingly dangerous magical attacks, Arthur finally decides that he should know his enemy, and cracks open a bestiary to study monsters. To his shock, the book talks about people who were *born* with magic, and suddenly everything makes a lot more sense, because one of the entries reads as though it was written with Merlin specifically in mind!
