Dally wasn't okay. That much was clear. She needed more help than Johnny knew how to give. He shifted his weight from foot to foot uncomfortably. The linoleum floor was beginning to peel back. “Are you sick?” he asked. “You want me to get Darry?”
Something flashed in her eyes then– something like fear– and she gave him an intense look. “No, you can't tell Darry. I'm in a lotta trouble.”
Johnny’s eyes widened. “Trouble? What, like… like baby trouble?”
“Yeah, Johnnycakes.” Dally flipped the toilet seat down and sat on top of it. She had to give it to Johnny for figuring it out so quickly. The kid was smarter than folks gave him credit for. “What other sorts of trouble do girls get into that makes them throw up at three in the morning?”
