Summary
The gold ring glints in the sliver of sunlight that peeks through the gap in the curtains in Aaron’s hotel room the next morning, sitting innocuously on the floor in the pile of clothes Robert had shirked off with haste the second the door slammed shut behind them. A glittering reminder that Aaron should give up on romance and join a convent or somethin’ because the universe clearly has it in for him.
Jackson, dead. Ed, a canvas of bruises from other (rugby, but still) lads. Ben, terminally boring. Marco, the only Italian in history to not like pasta. Robert, married.
About sums up his luck.

Summary
Aaron falls in love with Robert on a Tuesday afternoon in September.
His blazer’s shrugged off and chucked on the wall next to them, hair golden under the warm sun, and it’d be perfect if Robert hadn’t just fingered Erica Brown behind the bus stop.
[Or: Aaron's in love with Robert. Robert catches up eventually.]

Summary
“Bit warm in here for a jumper, innit?”
“Says the one wearing a hoodie.”
“Yeah, well, I’ve got precious cargo to carry ‘round.” Aaron unzips his jacket and pulls one side open, reaches into a hidden inner pocket to pull out one of the small plastic bags Robert’s come to know so well.
“Tonight is business then, is it?”
Aaron makes a grand show of looking Robert up and down. “I could be open to some pleasure,” he murmurs, acting all coy like he hasn’t just short-circuited every wire in Robert’s brain.

Summary
When the story’s almost over, Max’s eyes are wide with wonder. “Pretty eyes and an impressive tolerance for your psychosexual daddy issues? Jesus, you’re so screwed.”
It’s a testament to the gravity of the situation that Robert lets that blatant blasphemy go, though not without vowing to himself to remember to piss in Max’s coffee in the morning.
“And the worst part,” Robert starts, mouth dry as he realises he’s finally going to voice aloud the illicit secret he can barely admit to himself, “is that he’s my soulmate.”
“Oh shit!”
Oh shit indeed.

Summary
“What’s your name then, Bartender?”
“Who’s asking?”
Aaron smiles. “Well, me, I guess, the bloke you keep pouring pints for?”
“Robert,” he provides.
“Robert,” Aaron enunciates, liking the sound of the name on his tongue. “Tell me, since you’re a bartender and all, what is the meaning of life?”
“You adhering to stereotypes now?” Robert questions with a sly look in his eye. “You know bartenders aren’t qualified to be actual therapists?”
___
Or: Aaron meets Robert one day behind the bar at The Lonely Badger, and the connection between them is practically instant. For a man who prefers to let people go rather than let them in, it's utterly terrifying, but still, he can't stop pursuing him. When he finds out who Robert really is, and that their connection goes even deeper than they ever thought possible, what started as a drink across a bar forces them to break free from the ghosts they've both kept hidden away.

Summary
If Aaron never goes to another wedding in his life, it will be too soon. With all the peripheral Dingles coming out of the woodwork, he’s at a wedding almost every other weekend at this stage.
When he was younger, there was a period of time where he had been so incredibly alone, no relationship with his mum, no way in hell he was going back to his dad, no friends or family to speak of. That version of him would look at him now in wonder and awe, and Aaron’s sure current him feels that way too, somewhere. Underneath the exhaustion and weariness and irritation at being asked by yet another distant relative if he’s up next, he’s definitely appreciative of how his life has turned around. Well, definitely is a bit strong.
He’ll probably feel better about the whole thing once he’s completely pissed at the afters.

Summary
Aaron doesn't register the first symptom.
Or he does, but he doesn’t think much of it, his mind foggy with pleasure, his forehead pressed against the wall, nails scraping the raw timber. There’s just the slightest itchiness in the back of his throat, surely caused by the cold winter air and strained shouts Aaron has been trying to swallow down unsuccessfully, his voice echoing in a freezing space of the barn.aka
It's 2015. Katie is alive, Robert is getting married, and Aaron is quietly dying.

Summary
“Miss Flaherty, I’m calling from HMP Hotten regarding an inmate, Robert Sugden. I’ve got your number down as his emergency contact,” the man says, except that can’t be right. Robert’s not in Hotten, he’s off on the Isle of Wight, and anyway, why would Liv be down and not Vic or Diane or Aaron—
The man’s still talking, and Liv realises she’s frozen in the middle of the hall, missed whatever he’s been saying, tunes in just in time to hear, “…hospitalised. We can inform you of how the procedure goes.”
“Sorry,” she says, her voice catching, “sorry, can you…can you repeat that? What’s wrong with Robert? What hospital?”
The man sighs, like he doesn’t get paid enough to deal with this. Liv refrains from calling him a twat and listens.
[Or: It's 2022 and Liv's at Uni and happier than she thought she'd get to be. Apparently she's also Robert's emergency contact. It changes things.]

“I... I came to find you. Vic didn't know where you were, no one knew where you were, and neither you nor Kev showed up for the renewal. I told Vic you might still be here and that I'll come check on you, but… What happened? Who did this to you?”
The last part doesn't really sound like a question, it's said as if Aaron knows the answer already, and he probably does.
Robert squeezes his eyes shut. “Told ‘im I couldn't go through with it.”
“Kev?” There's a dangerous edge creeping into Aaron's voice. “Kev did this to you?”

“Well, if I’m being honest, I find it kind of boring,” Mel says stiffly, eyes focused on the melting ice of her drink as she fiddles with the cherry stem.
The whole table goes quiet.
“What do you mean you find sex boring,” Santos asks, looking absolutely gobsmacked.

Frank doesn’t get divorced.
Not when he tells Abby about his addiction. Not when he tells her that he’s been diverting drugs from the hospital and is on administrative leave. Not when he tells her that he has to go to rehab, or he’ll probably end up in jail.
Not even when the first stint in rehab doesn’t take, and he goes back for another two months.
So, he has no right to be jealous when he finds out that Mel has a boyfriend.

Aaron’s not afraid of much except Robert.
Not of him, never that. Not even the version of years back that threw his ego around like a weapon. Nah, Aaron had understood the bones of him even then and let anger and pity fight for pride of place.
Aaron’s never been afraid of Robert, but God is he afraid for him.

Aaron tracks Robert’s face, lingering on the bruise there left by his own fist. It’s only here, in the low light of their bedroom, that Aaron sees it properly, sees how it covers most of Robert’s cheek, how it has bloomed into a more purplish mark.

Summary
Robert can feel himself shrinking in the face of Moira’s suspicion and concern, wishing he could keep making himself smaller and smaller, to hide, to go unnoticed, to survive in the crushing shadows until his sentence was up—until the universe decided he'd been punished for long enough and he could curl up in the safety of Aaron's arms and let the world burn to cinders around them… If only things were that easy.

She’s just handing Aaron his change when the door swings open and a figure that she recognises but really, really wasn’t expecting enters the pub.
The woman looks a lot more put together than she did the last time Charity saw her. Immaculate makeup, stylish clothing, her long, dark hair smooth and sleek. She’s gorgeous. Stunning.
She glances around the room before her gaze lands on Charity. The second their eyes lock, one side of her mouth quirks up and she approaches the bar.
Fuck.
“It’s you.”

Summary
“We’re celebrating our one-year anniversary,” Robert told the receptionist while she programmed their keys, unable to stop smiling about it. “I got let out of prison one year ago today."
“It’s not our anniversary,” Aaron cut in. “It’s the day I married someone else.”
“Who gives a toss about John? It was the day we were reunited, that makes it our day,” Robert said.
