Summary
One year after Princess Visenya Targaryen II fled to Dragonstone to claim the dragon Vermithor, the Red Keep has remained peaceful, at least on the surface.
Rhaenyra and Laena continue to enjoy their growing family, while Laenor and Baelon celebrate the birth of their first child, a young prince named Aegon.
But all is not well between the two branches of House Targaryen and House Velaryon. The long-simmering tension between Rhaenyra and Baelon has reached a boiling point, with Prince Aegon caught in the middle.
Meanwhile, Daemon Targaryen has vanished from Westeros after Rhaenyra drove him from King’s Landing. Whispers claim he’s taken refuge in Volantis.
And as the court prepares for a grand tourney to honor the birth of his newest grandson, King Viserys stumbles upon something unsettling.

Alicent sighs. “I do not know. We were friends many years ago.”
At least, Alicent likes to think they were friends. But the princess was always sporadic with her attentions— quick to grow bored of things, discarding the old in favor of the new. Alicent supposes that’s what happened to her, as well. She had written letters, those first few moons after she returned to Oldtown.
The princess never responded.
