Tyler nodded, taking a sip from his drink to delay his need to reply. It still stung every time he heard Josh say that their home was never enough for him, because by extension, he really meant that Tyler wasn’t enough. Or at least, that’s what Tyler had always read the situation as.
He decided not to reply directly, instead he changed the topic of conversation. “Is your family okay?”
“Yeah, you know how they are. My mom worries, says I don’t call enough. I think everyone else is just happy that I’m happy, y’know?”
“And are you?”
“Am I what?”
“Happy.”

Summary

Nova always seemed to revel in the choice to take a sledgehammer to a peaceful moment, like it was a prickling feeling that burrowed beneath his skin until he’d destroyed what little good still remained in his life. With Torch, it was more of a chisel than a sledgehammer, slowly chipping away to see how far he could push the Torchbearer before he would run and never return, even if he knew he’d regret the choice afterwards.
“Not staring. Thinking.” Torch tried his hardest not to let a veil of coldness slip over his words.
“What about?”
“Like you would want to know.”
“Maybe I do,” Nova turned to his side, face now looking directly at Torch. “You love to assume that you know how I feel, Torchbearer. That much hasn’t changed.”
