That’s … concerning. Arthur thought he’d imagined the itching, crawling sensation in his throat, but perhaps it had been all too real. “I suppose I’ve finally started to hack up pieces of myself,” he says wearily. “There’s only so much that I can—”
“No,” John says, interrupting. “It’s … it’s not…” He hesitates. “I think it’s a flower petal.”

Summary
Arthur’s daemon had been a seahorse named Nimh, held in a sturdy glass container that Arthur kept secured to his chest. Now, his daemon is a black dog with bright yellow eyes and sharp teeth who goes by the name John. Arthur’s not sure what it means for him, that the physical manifestation of his soul has not only changed its shape but the entire fabric of its being. It’s not like there’s any precedent for it.
What does one do when one’s soul has been replaced with that of an eldritch god beyond our comprehension?
One simply … carries on, Arthur supposes.

“I used to be married,” Arthur says, almost to himself. “I used to have a wife. And now — what I have is a being living inside me who hates me, one I can’t even t—“
He cuts himself off with a sharp breath.
John’s not quite sure what he means by most of this. Arthur doesn’t sound bitter. He sounds… wondering, as if he’s turning something over. But it still rankles John, how easy it is for Arthur to assume John’s own feelings. It would be simpler, maybe, for both of them, if Arthur was right about the way John feels about him. He isn’t.

After John convinces Arthur to leave Addison, they do — eventually — talk about things.

The last carving I can’t make out, John continued. I think it must belong to the other two, maybe a name or a title of sort. Blind fool or idiot something. Basically the carvings say, sleep and perceive endless chaos, the Blind Fool Something.
“So, it’s a warning of some sorts,” Arthur summarized. Or just somebody carving an old tale in some rocks. Arthur let out a tired laugh. “Is it ever just tales though, in this place?”
It’s a rock with some carvings that are probably centuries old, John said. I am much more afraid of what might be out there in the desert.
In the desert Arthur sleeps and sees what no mortal should ever see.

He was still holding the candle. Slowly Arthur tipped it over, wax dripping down on John's hand.
Arthur, John said and his voice sounded strangled, almost breathless, making another shudder run down Arthur's spine.
"Oops," Arthur said and nobody would buy him actually meaning it, least of all John. "How clumsy of me. You should move your hand if you don't want this to happen again."
He could feel John's hand flexing on his knee. Opening and closing again. But not moving. Not pulling away.

It hadn't really occurred to John at first, how Harvey always seemed to fade into the background whenever he and Aeryn began to get sexual with one another. He supposed he'd made the assumption that just because Harvey was no longer confined to the dumpster - permitted to roam the halls of John's memories as a sort of animal-kept-behind-bars enrichment protocol - it didn't mean he'd be able to go somewhere if John subconsciously didn't want him to.
It wasn't until he and Aeryn were fifteen minutes into a session of heavy petting and well on their way to shedding the last of their clothes that he was forced to revise his hypothesis, however, as Harvey popped out of nowhere - right next to the frelling bed! - to curtly inform him there was an approaching Peacekeeper patrol and Rygel was asleep on watch.
