Summary
Caleb receives a vague invitation from Essek, who's calling in one of his many favors from the Nein. Of course, the invitation is for Caleb alone, at Essek's home. He really shouldn't go—it would be stupid and unsafe and altogether quite a bad idea, which Caleb's friends have no issue pointing out to him.
But Caleb is a curious man—one with a problem that perhaps Essek could help him solve.

Summary
We fell silent for a time. I waited, wondering if he’d brought me here to tell me something specific, and then, once that theory had been disproven, what I should say instead. I wished desperately to return to the ease with which we’d spoken during my final days in Talagray. All that I’d seen and done in our time apart suddenly seemed too much to put into words. Yet seeing him there, staring out at the gardens with an air of quiet desperation, I found myself compelled to speak as if by some preternatural force.
“I missed you,” I said. The words were past my lips before I could even begin to think better of it.
He glanced sidelong at me from the window, smiling fondly, yet I sensed an undercurrent of something sadder there, too. “You never returned my letters,” he said softly.
Or, my predictions for how their reunion might play out.

Summary
The integration between the Falconers and the forces of House Royce goes surprisingly well. Thjazi has to admit that a large part of that is not to the Royce themselves, as much as he adores his Nessa, but to General Davinos, who knows full well how to speak to soldiers and command their respect.
Unfortunately, General Davinos does come with one problem, who is fourteen years old, apparently fearless, and hates Thjazi’s guts.

Summary
In an alternate timeline, Essek is a part of the party of Dynasty explorers that the Tombtakers overtook and killed in A5, and they take him prisoner. Beaten, battered, and in chains, he's certain he's going to die very soon, until he hears the familiar voices of the people he's not sure he can still call his friends.
Later, in the nein-sided tower, an utterly exhausted Essek tries to reconcile with how badly he needs the Mighty Nein's help – Caleb's in particular.
