“Relax,” Sanemi says softly, his thumb tracing over her bottom lip, “I’m just going to show you how to do things properly. Is that alright?”
Nezuko swallows hard, her mind reeling. This is Genya’s older brother, her math teacher—it feels wrong on so many levels. But she’d be lying if she said she’d never fantasized about the rough, scarred man before. There was just something about his gruff yet gentle attitude that always attracted her.
Without even realizing it, Nezuko nods her head in agreement.

Nezuko wore innocence well. Like a cloud of naivety dressed down in an angel’s glow. Pretty and sweet and far too good for his rough touch. Like soot on new porcelain. Like mud and filth on fine silk.
No one would believe him if he told them about all the ways Nezuko liked to please. How she laughed breathlessly whenever Sanemi threw her on the bed. How she wrapped her legs around him to anchor him down. How those pretty pink eyes that seemed so innocent would light with a hunger of her very own. How much she loved to tease and please.
Truth be told, he wouldn’t want to share it anyway. A woman like her was of a calibre all of her own. Too good for the others to ever see. Too good for even him. Yet Nezuko wound herself around him every night and laid her claim against his skin, and Sanemi would be a fool to ever let her go.

There are three rules to surviving life in the Corps.
The first is simple: once you’re in, you’re in.
The second: no patterns. Patterns signal comfort and comfort may as well be a target on your back, begging for someone to come and take their shot (or several).
And the third rule? Don’t get attached. Keep your circle small so there’s less collateral to be used against you — against the organization that owns you.
For the longest time, Sanemi Shinazugawa found Rule Three to be the easiest one to follow. He has his brother and no one else. His parents are dead; he has no friends beyond those in the Corps with him, and he knows better than to get overly invested in any of them. His inner circle is as tight as it can get.
But then he chooses your bookstore to hide in, and that's when everything falls apart.

A good man would have ignored Nezuko’s letters the moment they began arriving. At most, he might have sent back brief, polite replies devoid of warmth. A good man wouldn’t have accepted her invitation to celebrate her birthday week at the Kamado household. He wouldn’t have allowed himself to be alone with her, let alone respond to her growing affection.
A good man certainly wouldn’t have surrendered to temptation and kissed her—freshly nineteen and so full of life—under the quiet cover of the woods.
Then again, Sanemi never has been a good man.

Sanemi’s fingers pressed against a soft spot of flesh, just an inch to the right from her belly button. He replayed that day over and over in his head. In anger. In disbelief. Eventually, in regret. He could still remember each part of her body his blade had pierced. The blood he’d spilled in glee and self-righteousness. The muffled screams and growls behind her gag as he’d inflicted wound after wound on her body.
And yet the skin was smooth. Unbroken and untouched. His affliction had been erased and, while he was glad to see his actions hadn’t left her scarred, he couldn’t help but feel like he deserved the shame of a reminder.
Perhaps it was a little perverse of him, but he partly hated the fact he hadn’t left his mark on her too.

She blew it out with a huff, and Numair made a sleepy sound and rolled over, the messy cloud of his hair going with him, leaving a warm space in the bed behind him. There was sunlight coming through the cracks in the closed shutters, and Daine could hear the palace sparrows outside shrieking about how it was the morning, the sun was up, the humans should also be up.
