Chapter Text
“What seems to be the problem” a nurse says, walking through the door clipboard in hand.
Evan sighed and wiped her hands on her grey joggers in discomfort, “my period is 2 months overdue” she said as she felt her face heat up in embarrassment.
The nurse nodded her head to the information, “Miss Buckley” she spoke as she read the name off the clip board, “has it ever crossed your mind you might be pregnant?”
“pregnant?” Evan whispered in shock. It wasn’t possible for her to be pregnant, and she said told the nurse that.
Mrs Benfield, a middle-aged woman, nodded along, “are you sexually active Miss Buckley?”
Evan bit her lip, “not anymore” she looked away in shame. Not since the lawsuit.
“When was the last time you were sexually active?” she questioned.
Evan’s eyes opened wide and her mouth agape.
The nurse gave her a sympathetic smile as she took notes on the clipboard.
“Miss Buckley, do you mind peeing in a cup for me?” she asked as she moved around the room and took out a plastic cup from a cupboard.
Evan shook her head as she hopped off the hospital bead and walked up to the nurse who held the cup out towards her.
She followed the nurse towards a small room with a toilet and sink in it and shut the door.
Her hands shook as she untied the string knot and pulled down her joggers and underwear before sitting partially on the toilet and peeing in the cup.
Once she was done, she pulled up her underwear and joggers, tying the string loosely, and washed her hands carefully with the antibacterial hand soap provided. She dried her hands with the paper towels and disposed of them.
Evan composed herself and collected the cup in one hand and opened the door.
The nurse looked up from her clipboard, flashing Evan with a smile as she rushed to collect the sample, “I’ll be right back. The results won’t take long” she said as she ushered Evan to sit back down on the hospital bed.
After she left, Evan pulled up the duffle bag which was left by the side of the bed and opened a side pocket which revealed her phone.
Pressing the home button, she was greeted with a photo of her, Eddie, and Christopher at a fair. Eddie had his arm wrapped around her shoulder, not looking at the camera as he placed a kiss on her cheek, another arm around Christopher- steadying him. Christopher was in the middle, flashing the camera a huge grin. Evan had an arm on Eddie’s jaw, her face scrunched up and a smile on her face. They looked like a family. A family she ruined.
Her eyes began to water at the image, and she quickly wiped them off with her arm as she pulled up her messages.
The last message from Eddie was 2 months ago.
I love you.
I love you too <3.
She wanted to message him. To inform him but she knew it would go unanswered and she didn’t want false hope. Most importantly she didn’t want to give him false hope.
As she was putting her phone away, the nurse walked back into the room.
“congratulations Miss Buckley, it appears your 2 months pregnant” Mrs Benfield informed her as soon as the door was shut.
Evan sat motionless.
“is this not the news you wanted to hear?” the nurse questioned, “you still have time” she said.
What Evan had time for went unsaid, but she still understood the meaning.
She shook her head as her right hand cradled her stomach and began circling it gently.
“I’m a firefighter” Evan said, looking up at the nurse, “what does this mean for my job?”
“unfortunately, you will have to be on light duty.”
Evan nodded, it didn’t matter what the nurse said, she was already on light duty- Bobby made sure of that.
Evan thanked the nurse and made her way out the hospital. She sat in her truck and admired her flat stomach.
“It’s just me and you little bean” she whispered as she stroked her stomach.
Evan looked over at her duffle bag and sighed.
“Just you and me” she repeated as she turned on the engine, pulled out the hospital carpark and headed for work.
