Work Text:

It had been a long day of pop quiz after pop quiz, and Grian, fWhip, Scott, and Xisuma had finally arrived back at their dorm; they had just come from the mid term break (meaning that it was only Scott and Xisuma who were returning to the dorm), but the pop quizzes had not been appreciated by anyone, not to mention how loud the halls and the lunchroom had been.

Grian had immediately flopped onto the sofa the moment he was close enough to, groaning when he was instructed by X to unbind his wings (though he was quick to obey, desperate to stretch them to hopefully alleviate some of the pain that they were in), Scott had booked it to the kitchen to grab a bottle of wine and two wine glasses, fWhip followed behind Scott to grab a package of sandwich cookies as a treat for making it through the day, and Xisuma shoved Grian into a sitting position so he could claim a spot on the sofa as well, as Grian had returned from unbinding his wings and had once again tried to claim the entire sofa.

A few moments after the two were settled on the sofa, Grian pouting at having to sit up, the pair were joined by the other two, Scott holding a bottle of white wine in one hand and two wine glasses (knowing that neither Grian nor Xisuma liked his wine, or alcohol in general) in the other hand, while fWhip was carrying the package of sandwich cookies with him, rolling his eyes when Grian hissed at the cookie package because they were chocolate (they rarely had chocolate in the dorm due to how dangerous it was for Grian if he ate it, but on the rare occasion that they brought in a chocolate bar or something chocolate based, Grian always made his displeasure known).

It was silent for several minutes (something that rarely happened in their dorm with how chaotic the four of them were together) as they slowly started to decompress from their day, before Scott spoke up- “you know- the best part of a sandwich cookie is the cookie part, not the frosting. Deal with it.”

This was immediately met with Xisuma shifting to look over at Scott, and exclaiming, “darkness without light is an abyss. Light without darkness is blinding. You cannot have a coin with one side.”

fWhip decided to get in on the chaos as well, seeing that a fight was probably brewing, claimed, “the cream’s the best bit, what are you talking about?”

As fWhip had expected, the three started arguing over this, destroying the silence that had fallen over the dorm, before Grian got fed up with them, having a headache from how loud everyone was being during lunch and class transitions, plus the lingering stress from all of the pop quizzes, shoved himself to his feat, and yelled “YO SOCRATES! IT'S A COOKIE! ENOUGH!”

“What would you know? You can’t eat them since they’re chocolate!” Scott shot back, getting a half hysterical giggle from Grian.

“I can eat the vanilla ones, Mom!” Grian replied, before storming out of the living space and slamming the door to his room shut, leaving the other three alone in the main area of the dorm.

There was silence for a long moment, all three staring at the door that Grian had just slammed, before Xisuma sighed, “well, that could have gone better.”

fWhip just rolled his eyes, “you think?”

“Okay, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting that to happen when I said that the cookie was the best part of a sandwich cookie, but uh, should we apologise?” Scott asked, shoving the package of cookies to the end of the coffee table.

There was silence for another long moment, before Xisuma sighed once more, “let him cool off some first, and if we don’t see him at dinner tonight then one of us can go and check in on him. Today was a long and stressful day after all.”

“I guess.” Scott muttered, before he perked up, “actually, speaking of dinner, what are we doing tonight?”

The conversation stemmed off from there, moving onto other things, and while they were no longer directly talking about Grian, many glances were cast at his door in hopes that it would open and he would emerge once more, though that didn’t happen, even after Xisuma called out, a few hours later, that dinner was ready.

“Okay, Grian hadn’t shown back up, and I vote that fWhip goes and talks to him,” Scott said, shortly after they had finished cleaning up from dinner.

“Uh, no. Grian and I may be close due to the whole 'being disowned by his parents' thing and staying in the dorms over the holidays together, but he won’t want to talk about that with me after we spent the break together with only each other as company.”

“So, ‘Suma then?”

“Probably our best bet!”

“I don’t get a say in this?” Xisuma asked, cutting into the conversation.

“Nope!” Both Scott and fWhip replied, causing X to sigh once more, before he pulled out his communicator, shot Grian a message that he would be coming in to talk with him, and entered Grian’s room, making his way over to sit on the outside of the nest where Grian was curled up.

It was silent for a moment, before Grian spoke, voice quiet, “have you come to put me out of my misery?”

Xisuma rolled his eyes, having been expecting this from Grian, “no.”

“Can I put myself out of my misery?”

“Still no.”

“Why are you here then?”

“Well, one, we wanted to apologise for earlier.”

“Not your fault. It’s how we tend to calm down.”

“Still, we should have known that we needed a different way. Besides, Scott and fWhip had their wine, so they should have been good without causing chaos.”

“Sill, no need to apologise.”

“And the other thing was that you need to have dinner. I’m not letting you skip out on any meals now that we’re back.”

“Ugh, fine. I’ll emerge from my room to eat. Happy?”

“Happy enough.”

“You sure I can’t die, Dad?”

“Positive.”

“Dang.”

“Now, come on. I didn’t spend an hour making chilli for you to not eat any.”

“You made chilli?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me?!?”

“I sent a message in the group chat, and I called out for you.”

“Is it still warm?”

“Yes.”

“Let’s go then!”

If, later that night while the four were watching a movie despite having classes the next day, they ended up coming to an agreement about decompressing after days like that one had been, and figured out a system on how they would identify what kind of stress relief they needed- whether it be their usual chaos, or some quiet time- no one had to know.

And if they all ended up falling asleep on the sofa, limbs tangled together in one big pile, then no one had to know about that either; they did regret it in the morning when the pain of sleeping like that had hit, but they got over it (mostly because they were almost late to class) as they were family, a found and chaotic family, but family nonetheless.

Notes:

I just love them so much, I had to turn that drabble into an entire fic.

Hope you all enjoyed! Have a wonderful day! Love you all, Kits <3 /p
