hey, anon it's no worries, I'm super happy to see people new to the fandom who are showing an open mind to this sort of thing and I've been meaning to make a pinned post anyway, so without further ado:
A Beginner's Guide to Sapphrina Scarpenter
so you may be wondering how a queer reading of Sabrina's music is possible? when taken at a surface level, her lyrics do seem pretty cut and dry, hot guy does this and that, she's interested, then it's either great sex or he turns out to be a dirtbag etc etc
and whilst those are great on their own and so many people are getting so much out of her music and lyricism without dipping further beneath the surface into the unspoken implications between her words, theres a whole other layer to her music, telling the story of a closeted woman and her trials with comphet, dating women and even 😳 some spicy stuff.
I'll try to stay out of speculation in this, especially around her relationships, there's a lot of shippers better qualified to tell you about that, but I'll give a rundown of the facts.
A lot of this theory has actually been pretty confirmed, it's just that not a lot of people know about it

Jesus christ, you guys really do love to take one line from a song, bend its meaning and reconstruct the entire meaning of the song to match that one singular out of context line. The devil is archetypically presented as a man that’s not new, it’s a song about not wanting to be embarassed by your partner. The line from slim pickens doesn’t mention anything about the partner’s gender. All of these are such a reach.

oh my godddd I was just listening to Slim Pickens and I had a thought
“Since the good ones call their exes wasted.
And the lord forgot my gay awakening.”
so obviously this is one of her only explicit references to the queer community in her lyrics. And ive always wanted to analyse it further. But like god if you think about it, in the context of her music writing she *is* the God. She’s going against the intended pathway of herself and her character of being a lesbian and instead being written as straight. It’s hinting at all the intentionality and decisions and just she’s outright SAYING she’s supposed to be gay.

okay yeah yeah, everyone always points at juno when criticising sapphrina, it’s a lot of people’s white whales, big debunking gotcha. Why would a queer woman write a song all about how much she wants to her bf to knock her up blah blah blah
and I know a lot of would-be sapphrinas too, who are like super on board with the theory up until listening to juno and getting second thoughts, and it’s just like guys!!! there’s layers to this!!! nothing she ever writes is just a cut-and-dry surface level meaning.
So juno, let’s start with the purposeful use of framing, there’s a lot of different metaphors one could choose for talking about pregnancy, and yet she specifically chooses juno… interesting. There’s two different ways you could take this metaphor: one, the 2007 coming-of-age drama film and two, the goddess of fertility
we’ll tackle them one-by-one
1) Juno (2007)
Juno is an amazing film written by Diablo Cody about the struggles of dealing with teen pregnancy and navigating the societial pressures put on women in relation to pregnancy and the complicated decisions one has to make during the course of that. The most important thing to note first, is that this isn’t exactly a joyful, sexy and all-around positive depiction of pregnancy – it’s about the fraught and complicated emotions and decisions surrounding it, making it a strange pick of reference for writing a fun song about how much you want your boyfriend to put a baby in you.
Juno’s pregnancy in the film is unplanned, and puts a strain on her relationship with her boyfriend, who together take the whole movie to get back together at the end. This puts a much more sinister tone on the line “If you love me right then who knows. I might let you make me Juno”, like what does she mean by this, is she perhaps talking about the ways pregnancy is treated as a forgeone conclusion to a heterosexual relationship, and how in the throes of denial of a comphet relationship that should be perfect (i.e: he is ‘loving her right’), you still feel disconnected and fantisising about a baby may seem like a way to ‘prove’ you’re straight to yourself even when all signs point away from it.
The reference to the film seems purposeful, a way of hinting that if you glance beneath this situation is far more complicated than the peppy music may make out.
There’s also a lot of specifics about Juno in particular as opposed to any other film about pregnancy that need to be noted. Firstly, Juno stars Elliot Page, an actor who is a complete queer icon and is exclusively interested in women, hm what could Sabrina be indicating with that? And let’s not kid ourselves Michael Cera (the love interest in the movie) doesn’t exactly not look like a lesbian. On top of that a Diablo Cody film? The Diablo Cody who wrote Jennifer’s body? One of the most classic lesbian films of the 2000s??
Honestly need I say more?
In conclusion this is such a nuanced and deeply queer adjacent film to reference when writing a song about pregnancy and there’s no way that isn’t intentional.
2) Juno goddess of fertility
Look I’m not gonna go as deep into this one because there just isn’t as much to say but like. There’s no reason this has to be inherently straight, queer women can want babies too and gosh greek mythology and ancient greece are so entwined with queer culture at this point that if anything her referencing them makes it so much more likely she’s gay than not. Like come on, Sappho is right there! Sappho-Sapphrina referencing greek mythology? She’s literally making it so obvious.
Nothing’s more gay than greek mythology. Case closed honestly.

She's a great artist! I'm not trying to deny that. But removing her from her context and trying to make her a queer icon when she's not is just insulting to all the actual queer artists out there. It's an act of complete self-serving denial that tries to package your entire experience and relationship to art as having to match with the rest of your self defined identity.
You can be queer and like a mainstream straight artist. It neither undermines your own queerness or your own relationship to taste and art to like her. It's okay.

Scar goes out of her way to get an early flight.
Business class, a small contingent of security, dressed down so as to not draw undue attention. Sabrina wears a lot of makeup, mostly as part of the look but it serves a secondary benefit for situations like this. It makes it much easier to convincingly dress down. The scars help, she usually puts plentiful concealer and foundation on when performing on or off stage, and she refrains when just out and about. From a body positivity perspective maybe she could do more by showcasing it, but the value for privacy and a physical mask win out. She never told anyone she was going to be a role model. So, lose the makeup, style the hair differently, dress in a good couple of layers, lose the contacts - she and her stylist have honestly got this down to a science.
The flight goes fine, she tried to offset the jetlag in advance by staying up and sleeping on the flight but she's not quite sure it's successful given she emerges into the dawn at Heathrow as groggy as ever. The tips of sunlight are only barely singeing the horizon as she steps out once more into the breeze and fresh (enough) air. She takes a deep breath, unable to stop her fingers from dancing an excited, bubbly rhythm across the handle of her suitcase.
She nabs a taxi at the airport, one member of security staff insists on going with her in it. It's a little dramatic but she'll let it go if it gets her where she wants to be faster. She's got a single minded dedication to a singular destination.
Home.
They part ways outside of a nice enough façade, it's a slim block of flats in central London, bleached pale stonework with tasteful trimmings. A bit manhattan style if she's being quite honest, she may have traded out Broadway for west end but one never quite loses the dangling vestiges of where they came from.
The taxi driver compliments her on the place when they arrive, she can't help but agree.
Up the elevator, down the hallway, key in lock.
Her hands are practically shaking as she slides the key in, her whole body buzzing with pent up energy. It's a bit the tiredness, it's a bit the general low-level hyperactivity, it's mostly anticipation.
The door creaks when it opens, it always has. A nostalgic, drawn out aching of an aging building. She tries to stifle it from ringing out quite so loud through the small flat but she severely fails at that endeavour. Plan one of muffling is a no-go so she's left with plan two, open it a small amount and squeeze her body through the smallest possible gap.
It's not graceful, it does not serve cunt, it's not her most feminine moment but she's dedicated to some semblance of quiet, god damn it.
So she fumbles through the door, locks it properly, leaves her bags by the entrance to deal with later and shuffles as quietly as possible to the bedroom.
It's all worth it as she cracks open the door to a sight of idyllic sanctity, undisturbed despite her imperfect entrance.
Grian's curled up on top of the covers, arms curled gently around Katy Bee, who sits face nuzzled into the crook of Grian's neck. Mr Finnegan is perched correspondingly on top of her shoulders, the line of his body nudged partway under the blanket clinging for life along the high point of her back. The rays of slow dawning sun are gently brushing against Grian's face, the edges of her hair catching the light and weaving golden thread through its blessing.
It's the kind of scene you want to tuck somewhere deep in the memory of your heart. A polaroid perfect frame to glance wistfully at as you age further from this point in time. Remember this dawn for the rest of eternity.
But she's too tired to pull out a camera and it's too personal to want to share, so she instead sheds her coat onto a pile on the floor to bother with later, pulls off her shoes and pads softly over to the bed.
At her approach, Grian's scarily accurate hypervigilance finally kicks in and her eyelids flutter open.
"Good morning, sleepyhead." Scar murmurs, still conscious of the sleeping kittens.
"Mmm, g'morning Scar." Grian whispers, her voice bleary but her eyes blinking wildly to rid themselves of the sleep nestled in their corners.
"Don't wake yourself up too much," Scar chuckles, "I'm aiming for a morning nap myself."
Grian shifts slightly back on the mattress, making a little more space for Scar. It's a little excessive given it's already a double but it's a thought nonetheless.
"Early bird gets the..." Grian mumbles the words out, the kind of aphorism more akin to Scar than herself on a usual fully awake morning. She cuts herself off by leaning forwards to kiss Scar on the lips the second she's close enough to touch.
A brief, chaste touch, the physical embodiment of 'I'm here, I promise."
Scar's so infinitely charmed by it.
Scar runs a hand through Grian's hair, and settles a hand on her cheek. Grian nuzzles up against the motion.
"How late were you up? Were you blogging about lil ol' me again?"
Grian grumbles and gives her a glare but is far too sleepy to pull off any real viciousness. And notably doesn't deny any such allegations.
"Late enough. The glorious benefits of having an almost fully remote job."
"And an on commission one too."
"Quite." Grian's face flickers, the idyllic comfort fracturing with a brief moment of unease. Scar catches it, of course she does. She just for once doesn't quite know what to say.
"I've missed you so much, G. It's great to be back." Is what she settles on, bringing her face as close to her girlfriend's face as she can without touching, pressing her other arm up under her own head, awkwardly bent so as to not disturb the kitten still snoring peacefully between their chests. Basking in the warmth and presence of Grian, there, the sun dawning in front of her finally once again.
"Missed you too," Grian kisses her again, slower this time. A press that lingers, full of a weight of something. "Love you."
"Love you too." Scar pauses. "Are you awake enough for a conversation or do you want to save it for later."
Grian's face flickers rapidly, a number of worst cases visibly spiralling in her head. Scar curses her tired wording's lack of specificity.
"No, no, nothing like that. Just about..." She hates struggling with words, her thing is words, this should be easy. "The whole fame thing. And how that relates to us."
Words are easy when they're performances. When they're a script or improv you're selecting to evoke a specific emotion or viewpoint in the mind of the recipient. Words are hard when they're honest. Or at least endeavouring for honest. It makes a part of her curl up and recoil at the concept. But it's important.
"I love you, G, so much." She presses her own kiss to Grian's forehead, which has settled into a light crease she wishes she could whisk away to Fantasyland. "But you keep acting like..." She can't keep struggling with this, this was the wrong moment for this but she needs to get it out before she chickens out. "I'm not leaving you. If you'll have me I'll never leave you. But stuff's changed and that's hard and it's harder for you than me and I want to talk about that, properly, at some point." She breathes, "But not now if that's, okay, right now I'm tired and honestly this was an awful moment to bring it up but-"
Grian cuts her off with a snort. She whines in offence.
"Sorry, sorry. Its just nostalgic, you're so unflappable nowadays, that I forget." Grian gets through her giggles then takes a deep breath, in and then out. "Yeah a conversation sounds... it sounds good, nice. Good to have."
"We don't have to go public or anything, I'm not asking that."
"I know you're not."
"But I'd like you to be with me for stuff. More. And I'd like to... you could move in maybe? Or just..."
"I thought we weren't talking about it now cause you were tired," Grian chuckles, slowly drawing out of her sleep as Scar feels exhaustion slowly send her further into her own. "But yeah, stuff to talk about... I might have no choice but to move in now, your cats have quite the dependant attachment style. I don't know if they'd cope." She slides a hand through Katy bee's fur indicatively.
Scar can't help her beaming grin at seeing her favourite person with her favourite non-persons, all curled up warm in the covers of her bed in her flat, in the flat that could maybe become their flat.
The slow dawning of the sun raises further as her eyelids flutter shut, "It's cause you're so lovable, G, they're just seeing the obvious."
Grian scoffs, but it's coloured so deeply by a tone of endearment that Scar is nothing but encouraged.
"Get some sleep, you've been busy." Another kiss to her temple, unable to keep them apart for any further second.
"You have to stay with me another hour. -t's no fair if you get up on your own."
"Bossy."
Scar just intertwines her legs with Grian's own and nods.
"Those are just the house rules. Nothing can be done about them." She murmurs. "You haven't accepted my housing offer yet so it's still..." She feels herself drifting further off.
They'll have their conversation. They'll work out how to slot themselves and their relationship into the grand puzzle piece of the world and the media and the universe. But for now they can just be. Here, curled up, just them, warm in the cozy light of dawn, low murmur of hustle and bustle beginning to awaken in the streets outside, kittens curled up against them.
"Love you..." She reiterates one more time.
"Love you too." The response remains the same.
