Summary
It’s a well established fact that physical touch to the back of Neil’s neck, right at the nape, brings him endless comfort. Andrew’s wide, calloused hands serve as a tether to reality and the fact that Neil is here, is safe, and no longer has to run.
For Andrew, the nape of Neil’s neck provides a similar comfort. Whenever he is overwhelmed, or tired, or ungrounded, or even worried, he’ll smush his face into the back of Neil’s head like a child to a teddy bear and just breathe in. Trying to center himself. Trying to tune out everything else except him and Neil, and just come back to himself.

It doesn’t surprise Andrew that Neil falls asleep no two minutes after that. He had been up all night, ignoring the medicine because it tasted “too sweet” and not laying down in Andrew’s or his own bed to avoid waking anyone up with his coughing.
Andrew looks down at him, face gone soft with his lips parted slightly and eyes hidden beneath his lids, thinks about how soft the man that called a mobster out on live television looks and feels like someone opened his chest and placed the sun inside of it.
(or, five times neil falls asleep on andrew and one time he doesn't)

Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

"Yeah, more like emotionally abusive. I don't get why the others don't do anything about it, though, like, if there was even a chance Neil would listen to me I'd be trying to rescue that poor boy."
"He probably doesn't even realize he needs rescuing, though, right? Like, that's how abusive relationships work. Besides, you know what his life's been like, with parents like his he might not know what a healthy relationship even looks like. And the others are probably too scared of Andrew to intervene."
