The woman smiled ferally, and Lance felt his blood run cold.
She lifted his face, cupping his chin. "Your mother didn't tell you anything, did she? She was scared."
"Everyone has crazy exes. You're not special," Lance retorted, both very bravely and very foolishly.
The woman seemed to want to incinerate him.
"Oh, poor little hero...it's her fault, for not preparing you, that you're here now. You don't know what blood flows in your veins. The blood of Olympus."
(In which Lance's family has many secrets, and Lance discovers them at the worst possible time. Meanwhile, Keith and the others will have to deal with monsters and gods if they want to save him, and with him, the whole Universe.)

She put her face in her hands and doubled over. Jason tried to touch her, but as soon as she felt his touch, Piper felt disgusted and pulled away.
She had to pull away, unable to bear the pain she was causing one of the best person she'd ever known.
"I don't even know if I love you," she admitted, feeling an unpleasant sourness in her stomach, "Maybe I never did."
(Piper and her complicated relationship with who she is, motherhood, and her feelings for Jason.)

"You didn't think to call? Not even once?" Dick shouted, a reaction he was more familiar with.
Anger, he could handle that.
Fear? No, he couldn't.
And knowing that Bruce's illness was stealing his last years with more cruelty than anything the Joker or Bane had ever done was terrifying.
(After years of not seeing their father, Dick and his brothers learn that he is dying. They take it as well as one might expect.)

"Jesus, Superman, don't treat me like I'm a child. You're not my fucking father!”
He realized what he'd said a second too late. It was a default mode, when he argued with Bruce, to remind him that he wasn't his father, he hadn't been adopted, he'd been easily replaced, there was nothing between them. Nothing.
And never mind his hurt feelings, and the loss he felt. Bruce had made it clear what he thought of their relationship. And Dick wasn't a child anymore.
He was almost ashamed of his outburst when Superman sneered dangerously, "You're right. I'm not your fucking dad. I'm fucking your dad."
(Sooner or later, they'll have to find a way to prevent so many aliens from obtaining kryptonite and its variants. But for now, Clark can uninhibitedly get some things off his chest with Dick.)

"How dare you stand there now? Playing the saint? After you ruined MY dad? After you treated me like I was fucking nothing?" Jason’s eyes burned with unshed tears and fury. "How dare you? You are the most despicable son of a bitch..."
"I KNOW!" Nightwing screamed, surprising Jason, looking at him with all the torment of a man who bore the weight of his sins and those of his father. He took a moment to calm down, breathing heavily, distancing himself from the other man.
"Fuck, Hood, I know," he began to speak again, running both hands over his face, " And there isn't a day that goes by that I don't regret it."
(Where the Dick Jason knew isn't the Dick Tim and the others now adore, and Jason doesn't recognise this stranger. Not when he remembers what Dick was like, and he hasn't forgiven him.)
