Summary
"Eddie?" Shannon picks up on the fourth ring. "Everything okay?"
"I kissed a man," he says.
The silence on the other end stretches for nine thousand years. Eddie can hear Shannon breathing. He can hear his own heartbeat slamming against his ribs. He stares at the apartment building through his windshield, at the lit window on the fourth floor that might belong to E. Buckley, and waits for his ex-wife to say literally anything at all.
"You what?"
"I kissed a man, Shannon. Just now. I was delivering food and he opened the door and I just— I kissed him. On the mouth. And I don't know why."
Another silence. Then a sound Eddie recognizes with dawning horror as Shannon trying very, very hard to suppress a laugh.
"Shannon."
"I'm processing."
"You're laughing."
"I'm processing." She fails spectacularly. "I'm sorry, I just— you kissed a man? Edmundo Diaz? The same Edmundo Diaz who wouldn't watch Brokeback Mountain with me because it made him 'uncomfortable'?"
"It did make me uncomfortable!"
"Yeah, Eddie, I'm starting to understand why."
Or,
Being kissed by your Uber Eats delivery driver? Worse things have happened. -

Summary
The picture on the back is a dark tree line contrasted by the wide blue sky above it. It’s faded, like it has taken one too many trips in the back of a mail truck, tattered and worn.
Eddie flips it over, the back scrawled with quick but somewhat neat handwriting. Scanning the words his eyes drop to the corner—the address.
‘Maddie Kendall, 1500 Hemlock Ave, Hershey, PA 17033’
Or,
An AU where Buck's postcards, which he sent to Maddie, were forwarded to Eddie on deployment by mistake. He becomes attached to the man behind the letters and his stories of his travels. Until, by a twist of fate, they bring him face to face with Buck himself. -

Summary
Day twenty-three, change of tactics.
I feel like you both are being dumb.
Dad unfolds this one and reads it and stops and reads it again like he's hoping the words will rearrange themselves into something less insulting.
"Excuse me?"
"It's my feeling." Chris spears a dumpling with his chopsticks. "You can't argue with my feeling, that's not how therapy works."
"I can ask for clarification on what you mean."
"Clarification about what? It's very clear. You—" he points at Dad, "both—" he swings to point at Buck, "dumb. Three words. Simple sentence structure. I learned about that in English class."
Or,
Chris weaponizes his therapy homework to make his emotionally constipated dad admit he's in love with Buck. -

“It says on my application that I’m married, but Shannon doesn’t want to confuse Christopher. But I need her to come in for an interview so that he can get into this school.”
“Well, it just says you’re married, but it doesn't specify who you’re married to, it seems.”
“What are you getting at, Buck?”
“I mean, what if I pretend to be your husband and interview with the school so that Chris can go?”
Or
Eddie and Buck pretend to be married so that Christopher can attend the nice expensive elementary school but one thing leads to another and Eddie can’t help falling in love with his fake husband.

Summary
Buck is fucking frozen. His mouth is dry, and his brain is blank except for oh no, oh fuck reverberating in his frontal lobe. He can’t answer. He feels the pressure against the metaphorical closet door, the hinges creaking against the weight of the boxes crashing down.
“Are those… hearing aids?” He registers Eddie's voice through the ringing in his ears.
It takes him a moment before he can finally whisper it out. He feels his head nod against his will.
“Yeah.”
The door gives out.
or: how a conversation about tardigrades results in buck grappling with a disability he's suppressed, getting hearing aids, and realizing that the family he craves has been there for him all along. in that order.
