Izuku Midoriya’s father is a Hou-ou — a Japanese phoenix.
For some reason, this means yokai have a standing invitation to pester Izuku with their existence. Birds assemble choirs for his birthday. If there’s no cedar leaf under the welcome mat, the amazake babaa that lives two apartments over will be knocking on their door by evening. His yokai-purifying excursions get mistaken for vigilantism far too often.
(What’s going on with All Might? Is Principle Nedzu a yokai? Tokoyami, could you please get Dark Shadow to stop calling me ‘my Lord’?)

Summary
Legend has it that if children leave the lights on at night, Mothman will come and take them away, never to be seen again by anyone. The myth becomes a warning to kids who have a tendency to stay up at night, but a beacon to kids who are abused or in dangerous situations.
Legend also has it that the Maiden will show up on the doorstep of those she deems worthy, holding a child that will be given to the new parents. She has never been wrong in her choices. Every child who is placed has a necklace with a moth charm on it around their neck, and they speak about how they were saved by Mothman.
Legend also has it that the subway tunnels are a haven for kids on the rough side of life, homeless, abused or orphaned. If a kid manages to get through the maze, they will be welcomed into the arms of a community of other children, and find a new home through the Maiden. However, if an adult dares enter the tunnels, they will disappear, never to be seen again.

Shota remembers the first time he’d found him. As with most strays, he found him in an alley. Like all alleys, it was dirty, and forgotten, and neglected. Abandoned. On that particular night, it was raining, and cold. He’d been lucky that most petty criminals had decided they’d rather deal in their activities when it wasn’t absolutely terrible outside. It just meant Shota had been crouching out on rooftops for undeniably long stretches of time in a cold, miserable ball for most of his patrol. If he hadn’t though, he would’ve passed the kid, lying face up in that alley, without noticing.
Or, an AU where Midoriya Izuku has No Longer Human from Bungou Stray Dogs.
