"Assume you'd forget to bring something, despite me telling you multiple times you needed to? Yes, Curt, I did. Wasn't exactly a difficult conclusion to come to."
Slowly, Curt smiles, eyes still slightly widened. "Thank you."
"Hm, well." You need to take better care of yourself. I worry about you. I don't want you going hungry on missions. "Someone needs to keep you humble."
Or, 5 times Owen couldn't find the right words, and 1 time Curt didn't need him to.

Maybe it's the fact that Owen's sure he's asleep. Maybe it's the memory of Big Burr. Maybe it's how a few hours earlier, after the easiest win they've had in ages, they'd sat at a bar laughing, and all of a sudden, Curt had turned to him with this look in his eyes, like Owen was the only thing in the world, and he couldn't decide if he wanted to shove him off that stool and run or kiss him senseless, and all he'd been able to do was mutter, "Let's go back to the hotel."
Maybe it's all three. All Owen knows is something compels him to run a hand down Curt's side and whisper, "I'm scared."
It should have been okay, because Curt was supposed to be asleep. Owen realizes the mistake as soon as Curt shifts- He didn't make sure his assumption was correct.
Instead, the mattress squeaks as Curt rolls over and looks at him.
Or, Owen submits to the mortifying ordeal of being known.

He's pulling out all the stops- he's got hours to cook, and he plans on using them. This is going to be a breakfast of legendary quality, the sort of breakfast you would feed a king, and when he wakes up Curt and surprises him, Curt will be so impressed and touched and proud that he will completely forget that two days ago, he snuck up behind Owen, startling him into grabbing the first weapon in sight, which happened to be a gun, and aimed it at Curt's forehead in an uncomfortably similar manner to the way he'd done it in the Russian Weapons Facility less than three months ago.
Yes. This breakfast is going to fix all of that.
Or, Owen struggles to reckon with his past and present.

Most days, Owen feels like a puzzle with only the corners and edges left, and all the middle pieces missing. Just enough to form an outline, a basic idea of what he should look like, but not enough to truly exist.
He says none of this to Curt, of course. The reason varies depending on the day. Sometimes, it's about not wanting to burden Curt, who worries enough already. Sometimes it's about not trusting Curt. Sometimes it's wanting Curt to notice without him saying anything, to feel terrible, to never forget what he did to Owen. Sometimes it's wanting Curt to notice without him saying anything, so Owen can know that Curt still pays attention to him, still cares enough to notice that he's upset.
"O? You okay?"
God, feeling vulnerable should be one of the nine circles of hell.
Or, Owen learning to trust again.

"I am, so long as you can avoid having a panic attack while I'm gone," Tatiana says, teasing with just a hint of truth to it.
"I'll be fine," Owen says easily. "You don't think he suspects anything, right?"
"Our Curt?" Tatiana smiles, and something in Owen's chest, something that used to only feel jealousy and rage, glows with love for this beautiful, messy family he's somehow found himself shoved into. "He was so excited when I told him I wanted to prank you that I think he's forgotten it's his birthday."
"Good," Owen says, "Good. And just to clarify, you're not actually planning on pranking me, correct?"
"Not all surprises are for the birthday boy," She says simply, smirking.
Owen laughs, and it feels good.
It feels really, really good.
He thinks that sometimes he forgets just how good laughing feels, but luckily, his friends never let him forget for long.
Or, Curt turns 50, and Owen reflects on just how far they've come.
