Elias had kept Barnabas bundled in his navy waistcoat for all these years. It used to smell of him, soft woods and something so uniquely bright and sweet, that Jonah was never quite able to get his apothecary to replicate, nor even find a modern equivalent now.
He nuzzled his nose to the aged fabric, dismayed by the simple fact that the scent had long since decayed away.

Jonah watched Barnabas smile and twirl across the dance floor with a dozen young ladies. They all seemed to swoon in his gentle hold. Their extravagant gowns fluttering just as he was sure their hearts were. None of the young ladies could compare to even a fraction of Barnabas' brilliance. Ill matches the lot of them.

Jonah felt adequately seen, and is presently enjoying himself. Barnabas is eager to refill their drinks, and they’re left secluded, speaking quietly in the corner of the party. Barnabas’ face seems flushed. He leans in however, and places his palm gently on Jonah’s arm.
“I’ve heard things about you, Jonah,” Barnabas says in a way that is somehow nonthreatening. He’s eager when he speaks in his voice hushed, breath on Jonah’s neck.
And as it appears, Barnabas is bold in his gesture.

He does not care to think of the number that constitutes the passing of this summer. Time merits its own considerations, of course, even to him. Only, when it is drawn in a no longer finite tangle, twisting and looping and curling over itself like too-sweet layers of thick ribbon candy, there is no real purpose in its considerations.
