En el corazón palpitante de Ninjago, se encontraban Kai y Nya, herederos al trono en el que habían crecido bajo la tutela de la poderosa reina Aspheera. La reina, con su sabiduría y astucia legendarias, había tomado a ambos hermanos bajo su ala protectora y los había criado como si fueran sus propios hijos (quienes se habían convertido en unas serpientes a manos del veneno de los Fangpyre, una de las tribus serpentinas de Ninjago), a pesar de sus origenes humanos.
Kai, en particular, al ser el hermano mayor, le quedaban cuatro años para ceñir la corona de Ninjago y convertirse en rey, pero una antigua regla serpentina se interponía en su camino, una tradición que exigía que el futuro rey estuviera casado antes de poder ascender al trono; Kai odiaba está tonta regla, la idea de contraer matrimonio antes de asumir el poder supremo era una carga adicional para el, ya que el romance y todo lo que conllevaba siempre le parecia algo cursi e innecesario.
Sin embargo, a pesar de su reticencia, Kai se embarca en una misión para encontrar una esposa adecuada, pero su vida cambia cuando conoce a Jay Lancaster, hijo de Nadakhan The Djinn.
