If we were not perfectly convinced that there were 12 animals competing in the story of The Great Race, there would be nothing more remarkable in the rat tricking the ox, in a rushing river, upon his own back, than there would be in any other rodent reaching the shore.
Shen Jiu knew he was dead. Of course he did. How could it be otherwise? Shen Jiu and he were Shixiongdi for countless years. Shen Jiu was his sole rival, his sole backstabber, his sole annoyance, his sole strategist, his sole shixiong, and, now, sole mourner. And even Shen Jiu was not so dreadfully cut up by the sad event, but was impassive on the very day of the death, and solemnised it by leaving his corpse to instead tend to his lovers.
