It's not exactly out of pity, like what Satoru would suggest, or even out of his upperclassmen obligations, like what Shoko would assume. Suguru doesn't particularly care for semantics like that—so what if he's one year older, or that he's of a higher grade? At the end of the day, they're all jujutsu sorcerers fighting under the same system, so it would do well to make allies.
Truthfully, he just doesn't want Nanami to be lonely.
