Summary
In the morning, the diner will be filled with police officers and dead bodies. The windows will be broken and black blood will be dripping down the booths and tables. Officers and bystanders alike will be hovering around the scene like flies around rotting fruit, utterly confused and too scared to ask the right questions. But that is for the morning.
In the morning, a young man with no name will stumble from the wreckage of a diner. He clutches a phone in his right hand and a sword in the other. The voices of impossibly ancient deities ring in his ears. He will look down at the sword and frown. He can’t even begin to imagine who it could possibly belong to.
But that is for the morning. Right now, in this chaotic Tokyo, people have been dreaming without sleeping for months on end. The edges of everyone's sanity are fraying at the seams and it appears that destruction is on the horizon. Perhaps worst of all, the nameless corpse of a supposed hero has just tumbled through a Gate. It begins.
An AU in which everything is the same but significantly worse and the end of the world, and the Game that fuels it, is just around the corner.

This ambitious project is intended to be a several-part series. Each part will cover an era in Steve and Bucky's lives. (There's an outline, even.) It's meant to be a fairly long story, built around sticking as close to MCU canon as possible. The intention is to create a framework by including canon scenes and dialogue to anchor your place in the MCU movies, while building out the backstory - what happened before, after, and between those scenes. And then to carry the story forward as though Steve's nonsensical decision in Endgame didn't happen (because it didn't - I have spoken) to show Steve and Bucky living happily after after.
Tags will be updated as I go.
You know the story: you can expect sweetness and fluff, (hopefully) humor, coming of age, romance and sex, pain, adventure, war and horror, Nazis and Hydra, creepy asshole "scientists", and all the usual Avengers suspects. It'll be the story of an inevitable friendship born of mutual admiration when Steve and Bucky are so young they afterwards don't remember ever not being best friends. It will follow that friendship as it deepens through shared history and trauma and grows into the love of a lifetime.Series

What if no one in the world knew who you were?
Bucky Barnes is a damn fine soldier, and so is everyone on his SpecOps team. They’re one of the most elite teams assembled, off the books and on the down low. A ghost team like Seal Team 6, without the drama. Their mission? Eradicate insurgent groups of Nazi leftovers recuperating in the Middle East. It’s not exactly what Bucky thought he was signing up for, but it strokes his ego, so he’s fine with it. He’s even mostly fine with leaving his very new boyfriend at home to do whatever it is that Steve does.
While left at home, Steve has his own missions, off the books and on the down low. An experimental team that the rest of the government cannot know about. So when he and his team are given location and extraction orders, he’s a little surprised to be paired with a second team. Hopefully he can knock this out before Bucky gets sent back home. The only question he’s left with is how the hell he’s supposed to find a ghost.
And how the hell is Bucky supposed to remember who he is when he’s spent six months in the desert being nobody?

Someone, probably the General since he said pithy things like that, someone told him once that war is hell. It was definitely the General. He looked at Bucky like he regretted every damn thing about him, as if somehow Bucky was all his fault. And then he said it. War is hell.
Then he shook his head and dismissed him.
Bucky didn't think anything of it. The General was an old man and Bucky was young, about to head into his greatest adventure. Not even the train full of clowns and poison could slow him down, not really. He got his first kill behind him and was ready to face an army that carried Death with them.
