Maybe it’s because of how easy pretending to be a beta has been that Taehyun subconsciously lets his guard down that day. When it’s his turn to use the shower in the dorm, he carelessly forgets to lock the door, and things are set in motion.
Right as Taehyun takes his towel off, there's a clicking sound, and before he can even register what it means, Yeonjun is on the other side of the door, letting out a small smile.
“Forgot the hair dryer in—” the light-hearted sentence abruptly stops as Yeonjun momentarily glances down. And Taehyun feels the moment in slow motion; Yeonjun’s pupils shifting down his body like a movie. And then mortification settles in when the older just stares.

Taehyun doesn’t know why he seems so surprised. He’s never even really had any friends his age, being trapped inside the castle walls and all. The only other people he’d consider close are Iseul, the palace’s housekeeper, and Ari, his personal maid. Unlike Beomgyu, he thinks. Taehyun’s tempted to ask if he’s his closest person too—even more than his lovely parents, even more than his dozens of friends spread out over all four kingdoms, more than anyone in the land. But he doesn’t want to feel the inevitable misery that will overcome him when he hears his answer. As nice as Taehyun is, Beomgyu no doubt has someone he favors even more than him, with the great deal of people he’s well-acquaintanced with. He thinks he doesn’t have to be the best. They all have people they get along with better than others, it’s part of friendships.
Even after this, Taehyun still cannot wash away the bitter aftertaste on his tongue. -
