Summary
“Arthur.”
Merlin is stumbling, barefoot, ungainly, down to the water’s edge before he has even made sense of what he’s seeing. He stands there, too hopeful to breathe, and watches the spot where the water tangles.
A hand. A head. Shoulders, a cape of water, and Merlin is running, crashing through the water, to the figure climbing out of the lake.
They meet where the water is waist-deep, and there they stop, several feet apart.
But it isn’t Arthur.
It’s Merlin.
Or, a grieving warlock tries to bring back his king.

Summary
Most people in Camelot would describe Merlin as a bumbling fool, always smiling, offering kind words and encouragement to his friends. Sometimes he could be sassy or sarcastic but never mean. He was just the kind of person who had a joyful disposition. And while that wasn’t completely inaccurate, it was also far from true. Merlin just learned to hide all the pain, resentment, fear and anger that darkened his soul.
And now, those feelings were gone.

Summary
“Merlin, do you know this fiend? Has he threatened you into allowing him to take your appearance somehow?!”
“Yes, I do know him, but he hasn’t stolen my appearance or anything of the like. It is, technically, his face too.”
Arthur’s brows furrowed with confusion. What was Merlin going on about now?
“This really wasn’t the introduction I would have liked, but I guess it’s too late for that now. Everyone, I’d like you all to meet my twin brother, Emrys.”
~
After a ritual gone wrong, Merlin's soul is split into two different bodies: one with magic and one without. And because destiny apparently had it out for him, the knights catch both of them in the same place. Without any better explanation, Merlin blurts out the only believable lie that he can think of: that the two identical Merlins are twin brothers. -

Summary
Too many people break into Camelot and take it captive. This newest one? Somehow one of the most successful, yet also the stupidest.
Basically, Villain of the week captures everyone who matters (the tagged ones) and summons Merlin from 1500 years in the future. Crack mostly.

Summary
Desperate to go back in time and save Arthur’s life, Merlin dedicates himself to writing a time spell; after all, he figures if anyone is powerful enough to manipulate time, it’s him. Only, he overshoots by about a decade.

Alternatively: the fic where post-s5 Merlin meets early s1 Merlin, and gains some unwanted perspective. -

Summary
After the rant in the episode, The Future Queen, Merlin decides there just isn't enough of him to go around. He uses a little magic to try to fix that, and shenanigans ensue. But it turns out, he finally gets some of the support and hugs that he needs. There can be some happy ending(s) for Merlin, after all.

Summary
For as long as Merlin can remember, there has been another voice in his head. Not that kind of voice that makes him crazy - he's not - but as if there is another person sharing his body. It might seems odd, but Merlin is use to it, so it's fine. He likes his voice anyways. After all, what kid wouldn't like having a best friend living in their head? It's only as time moves on that they learn that things aren't always as simple as they seem.
[Or where in people know that Merlin's magic is different. But no one seems to know just how different. It tends to make things... interesting.] -
