Season 9 canon-divergence. 2002 becomes the last documented year. The Colonists come and wreak havoc over everything that was once known and normal. From buildings being blown up to certain parts of the world not in existence anymore. When a simple patrol assignment goes wrong, Mulder finds himself bargaining his way to the top while Scully sinks lower and lower.

“I could have my men here beat you to death,” Smoking Man continues casually. “I could have them break you. In all sorts of ways. But I don’t think that would do anyone any good, do you? I have a feeling you’re both prepared to die to keep this information from me.”
He’s not wrong. Mulder and Krycek had both anticipated being tortured and most likely killed if they ever got themselves into this situation. They’d prepared for it.
What they’re not prepared for though, is what happens next.
“It’s a good thing I’ve thought about this moment quite a bit,” Smoking Man chuckles. “I have other methods of persuasion.”
He snaps his fingers, and two more guards appear in the cell, escorting a man whose wrists are tied and who has a black bag over his head.
They force the man to his knees, and Mulder hears Krycek choke out a gasp as the bag is removed from his head.
Jeffrey Spender blinks at them as his eyes adjust to the light, and then his face goes pale as he fixes his gaze on Mulder and Krycek.
OR
Post-colonisation, Mulder and Krycek are captured and will do anything to keep the resistance safe. But Mulder’s not sure he can trust Krycek not to talk if Spender’s life is on the line.
