His only solace, as he and his comrades search for the Corrodi remnants they believe to be the culprits, is the crystal telephone Marya had gifted him before they parted.
He soon learns that telephone- or maybe hearing his friends' voices- is key to protecting himself from possession. Perhaps, with the aid of Maxwell and Marya's beloved protégés, Torse can discover the key to breaking the curse drowning three planets.

A trickle of blood runs from the corner of his mouth down his scruffy chin.

Among the chaos and eviscerated bankers, they find another one made of clockwork, a clue tucked in the recesses of his metal mind.
If the trail of Comfrey MacLeod is made of stolen memory cards and impending financial ruin, then they are honour-bound to follow it. And if there is more to Max than meets the eye, then Torse is all too eager to heed the call to adventure. -

Silently trying to weigh if the reward of properly pushing him back into resting is worth the risk of potentially injuring him further, if Maxwell had to guess. “These are… what I understand you would call ‘flesh wounds’.”
Maxwell’s pretty sure his idea of a flesh wound may not be the best basis to start from. Not that he can, or will, ever admit as much to Torse. “Your ribs are bent back!”
