The way he’s looking at me there, it’s scary, you know?” Li Lun knew he didn’t need to explain to Yichen that he loved him because after all these centuries, Yichen knew. One frog manages to climb to the surface, just enough to capture the glimmer of sunlight above, and goes on to explore the vast world beyond the well it had always known.
Comparatively, the other frog is comfortable in its familiar darkness and refuses to leave its well. It chooses to cling to the small, limited world it knows, even as the first frog experiences the true beauty of the outside.
After the second frog left, the first frog now resided in a cold, empty well.
At night, it no longer heard the croaking from the well across from it.
Since then, the nights grew increasingly more desolate.
