Summary
It’s been a nice day, mellow-soft, like winter slowly fading into spring. War is far away from them, a surreal memory, instead of their day-by-day lives. It’s as if they’ve always existed like this, quiet and only half-mad. Here Levi is, shaving the face of the man he loves, even though he was supposed to lose him. Here Erwin is, his face shaved by the man he loves, even though they were meant to be apart. It strikes him then, so very unbidden, that they fucking did it. That they survived and now they are here and they are together and Levi is shaving his fucking face.
Sometimes, when he thinks about it too hard, something hard forms in his throat, a sharp-lodged obstacle he can’t clear away. It humbles him despite it all, but it’s the relief that gets him most. It waters him down like a paper-flower, leaves him limp and weak in his own bones. Not for the first time, Levi wonders how on earth they ever got here.

“Is that a wedding ring? Were you married?” the way she said it sounded almost offended, and Levi couldn’t help but snort, halting Falco’s admonishment in its tracks.
“Is that so hard to believe? That someone wanted to marry me?”
Gabi’s eyes widened, finally realising the social faux pas she had merrily launched herself into, and she raised her hands up in front of her, fingers spread.
“Uh, no! Of course not! I mean-” Falco nudged her shoulder, and she fell silent. It took real effort to hold back the huff of laughter tickling the base of his throat.
“No,” he said after a brief, uncomfortable pause, his good eye fixed to the dulled gold. “I wasn’t married. But someone did want to marry me.”
The kids exchanged a very unsubtle look before turning back to him.
“So… why didn’t you marry her?”
Levi scoffed softly.
“I didn’t marry him because he was my Commander.”
