   "Looking at Madeleine’s phone, Claudia watches a clip of her Maker selecting a groupie like he's shopping at some vampiric Whole Foods, make some crude comment about what he plans to do, and then make a cruder dick joke. By the time he whips his sweaty hair at the camera, Claudia feels like she could cringe into another dimension.

   'He knows people can see that shit, right?' The question is rhetorical. Everything Lestat does is performative, and the performance is for one person alone.

   Madeleine hums, a sound halfway between sympathy and amusement. "Apparently he also knows people can film it.'
