Michael just stared, thoughts scintillating behind his eyes, a look that Ava recognized from her teenage years, particularly when he would catch her doing something he had not asked.

Unlike Ava, whose two third of a torso is covered by the kitchen island with how freakishly tall it’s designed to be, Beatrice towers over her, and when she bends down to be at Ava’s eye level, Ava can see the muscles of her bare forearms flexing against the marbled countertop.
