Adolin isn't sure what answer to give. He's not calculating, not like Veil or his clever aunt or many, many of the girls he'd courted in the past. He just can't figure out what the truth is.
The truth is, Veil slipped out in the middle of the night and he's so aware she's gone that he can't sleep, either.
The truth also is that he's got an ambient, haunted sense in these halls even months after having taken Sadeas's life in them. Like blank stares are waiting in each brick-laid crevice.
The truth is, as well, that sometimes if Kaladin is too far away, he starts to feel like a flickering candle in the corner of Adolin's eye. Like he can't turn his head to see if it's sputtering out, or tipping and falling, setting the room alight in the process.
The truth he says is, "I can't sleep. And I'm bored."

Supervillain megalomania kind of lends itself to killing off swaths of innocent bystanders, the same way someone might crush a line of ants under their foot. The difference between those supervillain serial killers and the one standing in front of him right now is that this serial killer does it intentionally, is proud of it even.

She never elaborated and he never asked, thinking it was just a nugget of her dry humor, for both Gojo and Getou were at her sides when she said it, and all three of them had snickered amongst themselves at every layer of the joke.
By then, Nanami had learned to take any interaction with his upperclassmen with a grain of salt, so he’d chuckled a bit, too. The lingering looks, the offhand comments, the searing presence when he was sparring with Haibara meant little-- it was just a means of sizing him up and feeling him out. Nothing more, he assured himself.
However, that also meant that there would come a point where they would deem him big enough to handle them.
