    Shouto nodded again, his eyes still on her face. “She said my voice sounded like velvet dipped in justice.”

    The doctor paused for a beat, then gave a quiet, surprised chuckle. “I’d say that’s probably the morphine talking.”

    Shouto finally allowed the ghost of a smile to surface, brief but unmistakable. “She tried to ask me out.”

    “Well,” the doctor said, straightening with a light shrug, “sounds like your marriage is still thriving.”
