Summary
Neteyam attempts to wipe away the constant stream of tears that fall down his face as he runs across the beach. He's crying so hard that he can barely breathe, his breath's coming out in short, erratic gasp. It feels like the pain is trying to choke him.
He falls to his knees beside the water and curls up for a moment, letting out a silent sob into his hands as he replays the conversation over in his head. The disgust and hate towards his family. The silence as he waited for Ao'nung to defend him.
Or: Neteyam overheard something he wasn’t supposed to about his complicated friendship with Ao’nung and becomes insecure about his appearance. Enter Tsi’reya, ready to make her brother beg on his knees for Neteyam’s forgiveness.
AU where Neteyam was never shot, the RDA fucked off, and the biggest problem the Sully's now face is figuring out what's for dinner every night.

That's what his father had said. Or I guess that's what he wanted to say, even if it didn't quite come out that way.
That seemed to be his issue. Not following orders. Not submitting to authority, no matter who wields it. He tries to listen, to be the good, obedient soldier his father wants him to be. But he's not Neteyam. He wasn't born a soldier. He wasn't even born a real Na'vi. 5 fingers. Hair above his eyes. Kuru sprouting from the base of his skull and not the top. A freak. A loose cannon. Unable to bend to the requirements of his people. Of his family. And now here we are. Suffering, all because he couldn't stay put.

Summary
Buck startles awake to Chris prying his eye open. Chris’s concerned expression swims into his vision as both eyes adjust, squinting at the morning sun streaming in through the window.
“You’ve been sleeping for fourteen hours,” Chris deadpans. Buck is still half asleep, but he catches the slight waver in his voice, can see his eyebrows furrowed as he watches Buck carefully. “You went to bed at seven last night, and now it’s nine in the morning.”
“Nine in the morning, huh?” Buck’s own voice resembles more of a croak as he sits up, muscles aching and head still throbbing. It’s all a result of being struck by lightning and in a coma for a few days, he knows, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it.
But what he does like is the smell of Eddie’s sheets, the pictures of him and Eddie and Chris on Eddie’s bedroom walls. He likes the feeling of Eddie’s arms around him in the middle of the night, making sure that he’s okay and breathing.
“Christopher.” Eddie’s voice hisses through the crack in the bedroom door. “I told you not to bother him.”

The team loves to rag on each other every now and then, and teasing nicknames are often a go-to. Buck’s heard ‘em all - Golden Retriever, Bad-Luck-Buck, any variation of ‘kid’ that they think of…So, yeah, Buck’s pretty used to good-naturedly rolling his eyes at the names and throwing a few of his own out in retaliation. He even prides himself on coming up with the most obscure ones for his friends, pride washing over him every time they bark out a surprised laugh or playfully shove him over badly-hidden smiles. But Eddie calling him baby? That’s…Buck doesn’t know how to react to that.

“Hey, you good?” He asks, Lo’ak closes his eyes and tries to calm down his thundering heart once again. He then opens his eyes and stares at the lake in front of him.
“Did you do something? Want me to take cover?” At those words, he starts to tremble. Neteyam always took cover for him, even if he didn’t ask. It pains him that his dreams are so accurate with reality.
Silence falls between them again. Lo’ak feels so bad that he’s not talking but it’s like his mouth is clamped shut. Words aren’t coming to him at all.
Then—
“Oh, I get it.” He doesn’t think his brother understands. Now the fish are swimming away, far, far away like something dangerous has entered their waters. It makes his frown deepen.
“Do you blame yourself?”
Those words make him freeze.
“What?” Is the only word that leaves his mouth, quiet in shock.

Bit by bit, Buck stopped.
It began with the little things. First, he stopped checking his phone when he woke up. He used to do it everyday. He’d check for notifications on Chimney’s instagram, or maybe a new message from the 118 group chat. It wasn’t that anyone other than him texted at one in the morning, but sometimes he’d sleep past one of Cap’s old-timey GIFs or whatever.
Sometimes, Athena would text and greet him good morning. And a few weeks into knowing him, Chris would send a morning message begging for help, normally because Eddie was trying to make pancakes again.
So, with everything going on, Buck always made it a point that the moment his eyes opened, he would check his phone.
Until the first week after the lawsuit, and for the seventh day in a row, there wasn’t anything there except a pitfall in Buck’s stomach.
Nothing.
Never.
Not even a quick ‘hello’.
So, Buck ceased checking his phone. After all, why did he even need to?

So each day he does his job and he laughs and he jokes and he pretends he’s the care-free goofball he’s always been. And each day he packs away his bruises and his worries, takes them home to his empty loft with its quiet rooms, and licks his wounds in silence.
