Summary
We all know that phonecalls like this between Clark and Lex were a statistical certainty in Smallville -- rift or no rift.
Somehow between fate and the fallout, there's occasionally a surreal, late-night liminal space where vulnerability between the estranged men becomes briefly permissible -- and both of them are terrified of it.
Call 1.
They’re not what they were, but something ineffable lives in the static between them. Part grief, part chaotic Smallville absurdity, and part something else. Something that looks suspiciously like love -- not that either of them would verbally broach that third rail. -

Summary
Clark's stamina is perfectly fine. Apart from the very Lex Luthor-shaped hole in it: the slightest thought of his best friend can set him off. Clark decides to go to the man himself for help, and if he tells more than a few white lies in the process, what's the worst thing that could happen? Or the best?

Bookmarker's Notes
Such a great Clex writer <3 So good, Clark's inner monologue is laugh-out-loud funny in a literal way, not just internet "lol". Saving this for re-reads!

Bookmarker's Notes
Few things are better than Clark and Lex working together in earnest to fix something in Smallville. =) I realize I really love how much this writer really *gets* Clark. That's sometimes hard to find, strange as it is, but sometimes heroes' characterizations and demons are overlooked b/c it may seem like they're deceptively simple compared to the grey/dark character. The way she described Clark's agony over the missing kiddo was so spot on and true to the show/Clark's characterization and angst/feeling of outsized responsibility for the wellbeing and safety of others to the point where that empathy can be arresting and painful for him.
