Ezra has seen many people come into the Grand Line, has documented many of them, and knows that people who are too nice, too merciful, not ruthless enough – they all get killed within a day.
Monkey D. Luffy has fire, Ezra can see, but Ezra can’t see him getting very far. Not with a smile that bright and free. Not without the ruthlessness that is the key characteristic in all the pirates Ezra’s seen make it far.
No, the Straw Hat Pirates aren’t going to last.

Save one choice he made when he first entered Mariejois.
A choice he only learned about the full consequences of long after he had made it.
Which is just the way the person responsible for that poisoned choice prefers things.
(The Shallows Covenant does more than just make the holders obey Imu when they’re within range).
(Only the Red-Haired Pirates know that Shanks was the first person Luffy freed).

Tony Tony Chopper shrieks when he sees Law holding Luffy's bladder in its small box and he feels vaguely ashamed when the Swordsman walks into him analyzing Luffy's pelvis. But he quickly discards it with a shrug, the same way Zoro does. It's when he picks Luffy's heart that he wonders what he's doing. Wonders why his own heart feels like it is being hammered when Straw Hat looks at him with those infinitely dark eyes. Eyes like the moment before the break of dawn.
