Summary
Jason Fenix is kidnapped by a scientist who wants to kill him over and over again, for science, of course.
Jason hadn't died very many times, despite how incredibly temporary death was for him. It just wasn't a convenient thing, and deadly situations that got him killed usually ended any kind of life he managed to cobble together. It happened time and time again in Europe, where he would finally feel like things were working out and he had a life he could enjoy, then something would go wrong. It happened with Crispin.
Joining the E.P.O. seemed like the best opportunity to figure out how to end death's apathy towards him, but instead it made death his really bad dance partner.

Freezing cold over his torso shocked him to life. Screaming pain erupted from his nerves, fire and ice at war with lightning and swords. Chip lurched up with a strangled cry, voice cracking around the sheer surprise.

Water splashed against the side of the tub as he squirmed against the conflicting sense of burning and freezing. Everywhere his skin touched the water hissed, the hazy world around him slipping further out of focus as steam—now cold like mist—floated into the air.

Summary
A mysterious collection of thin, stick-like objects —a hand, he noted after much consideration— dragged through his hair. It caused his hair to spill over itself before it was sorting it back out, letting the strands rest where they belonged. This hand repeated the action a few times before it settled between his shoulder blades.
It hurt, and for a moment he couldn’t recall why before he remembered how everything hurt. Everywhere hurt. He could ignore it but it all hurt and it wouldn’t stop unless he let it stop but if he let it stop then everything would stop and—
Another weight pressed against his leg. The action triggered an intense buzzing sensation that jolted him from his thoughts and encompassed his entire lower body. He could feel a coolness radiating up his body from that point, especially as it reached up to his chest where the pain was strongest. After the weight was removed, he still felt the numbing chill and subtle buzzing.
Gillion is dying in a rowboat. Chip and Jay are worried.

“Chip,” and God, it sounds just like him, “could you open the door?”
Or; Chip locks himself in a fortified room, and Dopple-Gillion tries to convince him to open the door.
