It unfurled in the bright silence of Beatrice's observation like a plant exposed to sunlight, testing its shoots for somewhere which might provide more energy. She padded over to the window in her shirt and watched the day dawn over the ocean.
She could see that sunrise Vincent had written about in that diary entry, streaking across the sky.
Fishermen sat by their boats, in from the first round of fishing (not that there were very many left in the ocean), shouting at apprentices to pull the boats in and weigh their catches. Women joined, running from behind the stalls, clamouring for the best fish to sell alongside the meat and vegetables they had found and cured themselves. Half-burned, blackened trees huddled in on either side of the flat clearing as skeletons conserving heat.
