When Uther was given a converted dragon as part of his divorce settlement from second wife Katrina, he did not realise quite what a bumpy ride he and his son Arthur would be in for.
Featuring randy dragons, Captain Merlin, Co-Pilot Gaius, aircraft A-THSA, slightly dim Arthur and good dad Uther who’s trying to hold it together in the face of adversity. Adversity being the name given to a magical idiot whose power exceeds his intellect to the extent that his magic obeys an oblivious Arthur’s every whim, however mundane or ludicrous.
AKA the magical Cabin Pressure AU that no-one asked for.

With the acting world seemingly set against him, he takes a job as far away from London's glitzy theatreland as he can think of – at a down-at-heel castle in the far north of Scotland. There, he encounters a gruff, kilt-wearing shepherd with sturdy knees and the sort of Viking beard that Merlin would just love to bury his face in. After a rocky start, friendship blooms - and perhaps the potential for something more. But both men are hiding secrets that could blow the whole thing wide open.
In which BBC Merlin's characters get the Hallmark movie treatment. In Scotland. Because Arthur obviously needs to wear a kilt and strut around the highlands looking pretty.

Summary
Arthur catches him staring. His eyes fall to Merlin’s lips. For once, he doesn’t look away.
His gaze does what the fire can’t. Merlin leans closer, tilts his chin up like an offering. “Arthur.”
Arthur casts a furtive glance around the camp, exhaling shakily. He leans in; Merlin closes his eyes. The tip of his cold nose brushes against the side of Merlin’s. His bottom lip bumps into Merlin’s top one.
A raven caws and Arthur jumps away.

Merlin knows it’s better him than anyone else - it’s the mantra he repeats like a lifeline with every aching step he takes up the endless stairs in the castle, bones protesting and bruises littering his mauled chest. It’s better him than Gwen, he thinks, hands shaking as Arthur hands him off to Lord Something-Or-Other, known for whipping his servants into submission. It’s better him than the laundry girls, barely older than ten, trembling in fear as Sir Newest Knight throws a predatory gaze like a promise.
It’s better him. He has magic, so he could fight back, if need be. No one else has magic, so they couldn't fight back. It’s that simple.

Summary
Everyone insisted that Arthur needed time to process, to accept that Merlin was gone. The only problem was that Merlin wasn’t.
Arthur didn’t know how to explain it without sounding like Uther when he’d seen Ygraine in the well, like he was losing his mind and looking for ghosts. He didn’t know how to look at his court and make them understand that Merlin had once told him about nature, about the sacred connectedness of the earth, and asked Arthur if he felt it. He didn’t know how to say that he hadn’t felt it back then, but that he did now. He felt it all. He felt Merlin in it.

Merlin saves Arthur's life at Camlann at the cost of his own. Merlin can't die, so it's not that simple.

He was cursed, he knew, by his own actions. Had he listened to his own heart, Arthur wouldn't be stuck, repeating the same day again and again. But while time looped itself, Arthur's mind did not. Merlin couldn't help him this time. He would solve it on his own; he had to.
