“H-hotch?”
Spencer squeaks, scrambling back against the dryer. It’s times like this where he forgets that they live in the same building, which is only facilitated by the fact that it barely plays a role in their day to day lives. It’s rare that Hotch offers him a ride, both of them so stuck in their usual routines that they end up taking their own ways to Quantico, and at work, it’s never a big topic of discussion either. Spencer also pointedly doesn’t allow himself to think about it, lest the potential domesticity of it all goes to his head and makes him slip up.
Perhaps, he should have kept his guard up more. Then again, what are the odds of walking into his superior at almost 5 AM in the morning, doing laundry?
“I-I thought you were away with Jack and Jessica this week.” Spencer sputters.
“You’re wearing my shirt.” Hotch points out, flat, straight to the point.
Or: Spencer has a slight mishap and needs to do his laundry in the shared laundry room of the apartment complex both he and Hotch live in. Half naked. In Hotch's shirt. It goes as well as you'd expect it to.

He can hear voices outside, and a sound that bears a striking resemblance to Morgan’s laughter. Forty four percent of incarcerated people have some kind of mental illness. It’s not surprising his mind is resorting to something that sounds comforting from before, he’s probably suffering some kind of break right now, in the after. Still, the memory of the sound curls itself under the throbbing of his traitorous heart trying to escape the confines of his ribcage. Perhaps there was something to be said about how the memory of Morgan’s laughter could still do this to him after all this time. Then again, this too, should be familiar. He’s always been powerless in the face of that thousand watt smile, more so when it was directed at him – toothy, and blinding.
or, Derek makes breakfast for Spencer and his mother. Somewhere in between sharing meals and showing up, they find their way back to each other.

Aaron Hotchner couldn't ask for better agents than David Rossi, Derek Morgan, Emily Prentiss, and Jennifer Jereau. In fact, he prides himself on heading the best team the BAU has to offer. Still, he's not so arrogant he doesn't know when it's time to call for help, so when his team hits a brick wall with a ticking clock, he reaches out to the Intelligence Control and Analysis Program. ICAP sends him a mountain of files, all of them good candidates, but Hotch is repeatedly drawn to the same file. Genius #2036334-4383 has three doctorates and a high success rate with the Bureau, though he's never been in the field. According to his file, he has behavioral issues and doesn't play well with others, but Hotch doesn't see that being a problem. It's a temporary arrangement, after all.
