“And us?” Will challenges. He looks Mike directly in the eye, nearly taking Mike’s breath away once again. Mike’s heart races inside his chest.
“We’re friends,” Mike says defensively. The implications of Will’s words aren’t lost on him, so for good measure, Mike emphasizes, “We’re friends, Will.”
“Yeah well, we used to be best friends, Mike!” Will shouts, and his voice cracks again.

Summary
Mike pulls him into a hug instead.
It's tight and grounding and safe, and Will lets himself sink into it, lets himself pretend for just a moment that everything might actually be okay. Mike's arms are solid around him, one hand in his hair, and Will can hear his heartbeat, steady and sure.
"I'm not going to let him take you," Mike whispers against his hair. "I'm not going to let him use you. We're going to figure this out, okay? We're going to save those kids and stop Vecna and get him out of your head, and everything is going to be fine."
Somewhere between slaying interdimensional eldritch horrors, exploding an entire dimension, and risking their lives countless times, Mike and Will find each other.
Or; Season Five Volumes 2 and 3 retold so there's no plot holes, no bittersweet epilogue, and Mike and Will get their happy ending.

You have more in common with him than El, says the voice in Will’s head. He wonders, briefly, whether it would be weird to shove his face back into the pillow and scream.
Will is definitely not qualified to be giving out any relationship advice. For one, he's never actually dated anyone before. Second, one of the people in said relationship is his sister. And third, the other person is the guy he's sort of in love with. There's no possible way this could backfire. Right?

Summary
“Come back here!” Mike pleads.
“I can’t,” Will replies weakly, and he’s sure his voice isn’t strong enough to travel. Mike inches closer, like those few centimeters would make the difference.
“I’m jumping in then!” And then he’s wringing the shoes off, hastily kicking them behind his back.
On the eve of the final battle, Will is drawn to the lake by an unknown force. He tries to cut everything short and free Hawkins on his own, but Mike just won’t let him go.

Summary
Will takes a moment, hands clenched into fists at his sides, to rest his head against the grain of the wood and close his eyes. Here, with the solid weight of the door to ground him, he evaluates the facts: the war is over, Vecna dead and gone for good this time. Max is awake, reunited with Lucas and El at last, who both rushed to return to their places at her bedside the moment they knew. The rest of his family is upstairs, the rest of his friends alongside them, alive and mostly well and rejoicing in the fact that a years-long nightmare has finally reached its conclusion. It’s a night for togetherness, for celebrating hard-earned victories, for finally looking ahead instead of back over their shoulders.
It’s also a night where Will almost killed Mike.
In the midst of their final stand against Vecna, a possessed Will nearly strangles Mike to death. In the basement bathroom of the Wheeler's house after their victory, Mike and Will confront the aftermath.
