    There, nestled lovingly in a cozy nest lined with bubble wrap and tissue, is a small lucky cat statue.

    Izuku lets out a quiet gasp, and carefully scoops the statue up into his hand. It’s black, with a red collar and gold detailing. Its little eyes are squinted happily, and the curl of its mouth looks content.

    “Someone must want to keep you safe.” Shinsou says, while Izuku rubs his thumb over the raised characters on the cat’s coin. “Black lucky cat statues are meant to keep away evil and keep people healthy- wait, Midoriya, are you crying?”

    After Izuku gets hurt again during a routine class exercise, Class 1-A decides they've had enough of his bad luck, and decide to do something about it by sneakily gifting Izuku all different kinds of good luck charms. It'd be a great plan, if they hadn't forgotten that Izuku's nerves are always turned up to 11.

    It became somewhat of a routine, somehow. Everyday at lunch Midoriya would intercept him, say something cheery, and hand him a Kit Kat. A few times they ran into each other outside of lunch period and half the times Midoriya would still have a Kit Kat on hand for him.
    It was kind of fucking weird but Hitoshi was getting free Kit Kats out of it so he wasn’t about to complain.

    The first sign that Deku teaches him is easy.

    It's just "Hello."

    Deku signs it slowly, with a patient smile, hand moving gently and fluidly through the air. His years of experience are obvious.

    And Katsuki, who has only started learning five minutes ago, signs back at him with fingers that feel clumsy, in motions that stick and fail to flow the way they should.

    He wants to scream.

    When the volume and force of Katsuki's explosions finally break through his natural defenses and begin to take their toll, Izuku is by his side whether Katsuki wants him to be or not.

    Poor Aizawa-sensei is very done with them.

    The first taboo word is, of all things, spaghetti.

    It had started with a cat meme being posted on the cupboards, very literally, thin printer paper and All Might-patterned washi tape, of the spaghetti cat scowling down at everyone, a simple caption of "no more spaghetti" typed out.

    This may have preceded a siege of pasta-based dishes for dinner from Bakugou, some boycotting, two food fights, and finally a fist fight in the canteen, surrounded by a chant of "spaghetti scrap! spaghetti scrap!"  from those of the class not taking part.

    Hence Aizawa-sensei banning so much as the mention of spaghetti.
