Summary
Sam's a romantic. He adored hearing about fairy-tale soulmates living happily ever after, and stories that his mama would tell him about his dad. He also loved Max, and thinking about them fighting crime and solving cases together for the rest of their lives made him feel all fuzzy inside.
But Max wasn't his soulmate, and certainly didn't return his feelings.
Max couldn't care less about soulmates nor happily ever after, but since Sam, he can start to imagine himself as the hero in the story, driving into the sunset with his partner. After all, he loved Sam, and Sam was such a sap.
But Sam has a soulmate, and it's not Max.

It’s quaint, in a nauseating sort of way. Polished floors glint from the gleaming honeycomb chandeliers overhead, make him squint. A few vases sprinkled here and there, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet scent – even a waffle-cone headrest framing the silken sheets of a neatly-tucked bed. Outside, the golden sun gleams, the gentle rays of light spilling past curtains that waver in the afternoon breeze.
It's meant to be beautiful. Luxurious. Welcoming.
