Post RE6. Another fix-it, about six years late. The body is under a white sheet when Chris walks in. The tag on his foot— the only part of him visible— has his name and rank: 1LT NIVANS, PIERS, and when Chris sees it he can’t move, or think, and he just stands there in the open doorway with the lights off, and waits for it to feel real.
It never does.

They're comrades, blood brothers- no, not "partners", not in that sense of the word, anyway. So what if Chris knows that Piers has an unhealthy infatuation with caramel lattes, and so what if Piers knows that when Chris gets pissed, that all he really needs is a beer? It's what friends are for, to look out for each other- and yeah, whenever Piers has a nightmare, Chris lets him crawl under the covers next to him, lets him put his arms around him, lets him press his nose up against his neck- but it doesn't mean anything, or whatever.

No one truly knew how it all started.
Perhaps the virus had been leaked by terrorists. Maybe the lingering threat of global warming had caused a dormant virus to finally break free and wreak havoc. Perhaps the virus was an experiment conducted by Umbrella, just like the survivors would later claim. Perhaps it was just simply chance and circumstance, the way most things happen. Just another pandemic.
Honestly, it didn’t even matter.
Because no matter how quickly the virus spread, fear spread even faster.

I’m going to kill you, he mouths at Bode. He can almost see the ghost of his own reflection in the glass, the yellow in his eyes barely visible for all the blue he’s trapped in. Bode’s are still brown beyond the bacta, dark and familiar. Cal hates that they are, that despite all the death he’s caused, there’s no telltale ring of sickly yellow to indicate how he’s fallen. Not like Cal did.

“Hey Scrapper.”
Cal whirls around, kicking himself back on instinct, tilting into a backward sprawl. His eyes widen, black pupils swallowing most of the green, a shiver racking down his spine.
Bode tilts his head. He sits above and across from Cal on the ledge, wedged into the horizontal branches of a tree. He has a hand hooked on the branch above him, swaying back and forth a little as he leans his cheek on his bicep. He watches Cal with soft, dark eyes, a touch of confusion in the tilt of his lips. The death veil lays in his lap, folded up into a square, Bode’s hand resting on it. Bode looks, in all appearances, like his usual self. Provided, at least, that Cal ignores the two perfect circles burned out of his shirt, the material around them soaked with blood, the peek of new pink skin underneath.
“Bode?” Cal hardly recognizes his own voice, raspy and barely-there.
Bode holds his hand up in greeting, his brows bending into a frown. “Hey, where are we? I don’t remember… getting here.”

"Bode-" Cal stops and coughs, pressing a hand to the burn mark on his chest. Dagan must've gotten a good hit in while Bode was too busy witnessing his worst nightmares in vivid detail.
(Or: that glancing lightsaber blow to Cal's chest isn't so glancing. Bode calls on knowledge he hasn't used for a long time. Their differing opinions regarding Tanalorr are a problem for another day.)
