“Hey! No saying sorry! It’s not like me taking us off the path is your fault!” Satoru forces a laugh, and when it echoes back to him, he’s relieved to hear that it sounds almost genuine. Kitamoto will probably be able to tell, but not gentle, lonely Natsume, whose distant expression seems to soften when he turns to look at Satoru.
His eyes are warm and familiar and nothing at all like the glassy, doll-like gaze he used to watch the world with. He meets Satoru’s curious look head on, like he’s searching for a map out of this stupid, creepy forest inside his eyes. A small smile twitches at the corners of his mouth, though it is miles away from happy.
“This isn’t your fault either, you know,” he murmurs as he holds Satoru’s eyes, and wow, apparently he was all wrong about Natsume not being able to tell, after all. That’s embarrassing.

“Do you think he was telling the truth?” Orange asks, his voice uncharacteristically low to not wake Blue or alert their father to their escapades. They’re not supposed to leave the fortress after dark without explicit orders, much less go to the human city all on their own. Getting into a fight on top of that would guarantee they get grounded for a month. Red grimaces; he’d been hoping that neither of his brothers had heard the stranger’s crazy claims. Still, he takes the time to think it over before he answers.
“I don’t know what reason he’d have for lying,” Red admits after a moment, not in the habit of withholding information from his brothers. “But I think father would have told us if there were any other experiments running around the city. He was probably just confused, and mistook us for somebody else. There’s probably some kappas out there right now lookin’ for him right back.”
“He called me Mikey,” Orange murmurs, his expression far away, like he hadn’t even heard the answer to his question. A smile slowly spreads across his face, though it seems a little sad. “I like it.”
