“We would like to offer our sincere condolences regarding the passing of your husband,” Ethrand states in a lofty drawl.
Julien sees Aranessa’s jaw go taut. “Thank you for thinking of us in our time of mourning,” she grates out.
“Of all Houses, House Tachonis would never seek to downplay or invalidate the importance of a mourning period. However, certain circumstances warrant a loosening of the proscribed timelines.”
Julien’s jaw falls ajar. He can't possibly mean...?
“I fear I fail to understand you," Aranessa hisses. "Elaborate.”
“All this recent unpleasantness was the consequence of years of unfortunate misunderstandings between our two houses. In contravention of what one might expect, I am pleased to say that I am here with an entreaty of peace.”
Aranessa allows a long silence to transpire, one that seems to make even Ethrand uncomfortable. “I will hear the details.”
“In exchange for a lasting peace, we only seek to solemnize this new alliance with a vow.” Ethrand smirks. “Accordingly, my father offers you the hand of my brother Occtis in marriage.”
Julien looks down at the rug. If he doesn’t look down at the rug, he’s going to start shouting.

He is able to turn his mind from it only as they draw close to Castle Torch, quietly relieved he did not have to struggle for that outcome and that they all walk together. Five is not much, but it is better than two.
When asked, he advocates to show their colours. He cannot answer otherwise. “There has to be a place that we can call friends.”
If Castle Torch proves lost in the same way as everywhere else Julien knows he will not be able to run away from taking a price for that until he is spent. Maybe not even if commanded. Here is different. Here he was, for reasons he is still unclear on, given care of others; not merely in theory, he knows their faces and has pulled each and every one of them to their feet at some point before he laughed and told them to try again. So, Castle Torch cannot be lost. He still has to get Aranessa to the Orchard, therefore he must stay alive that long. No one will be lost and he will not have need to join them.

"Are you certain, my lady?" Raimond's fingers tap against his sword hilt. A minor habit of his. He only ever does it when he's thinking of his son. "I hate to put you to such trouble. It is not your place, or the place of your House, to clean up my House's shameful....indiscretions."
Something hot and bright snaps through Aranessa's bones. It feels like a static shock, like ruffling someone's hair after a long run or standing right below a lightning strike. She swallows it smoothly, and does not let her face shift at all.
"Your House is my House, General," she says. It is the kinder option. The other option would be to remind him that he does not determine what is fitting for her place, at any time. It is, and always will be, the other way around. But words get sharp and tongues get loose at this hour of the evening, and she is an adult. She can keep a proper hold on hers. "It is no trouble. It is already done. Go to sleep. Keep the guard rotations as they are. Julien will be well in hand by tomorrow."

To sidestep further drama in House Davinos, Aranessa goes to fetch Julien from his latest night of fun.
It proves...challenging. In more ways than one.
