Is that always for the best though? Not that she could ever know. By the end of last year, even the weirdo who asked her out was becoming predictable. Snakes? Sure, why not. It was different, but not for her. What would be different was if she became shy and became the one person in school who, for one reason or another, could and would leave her alone. Not that that could ever happen. She'd have to be effectively a new person for that.
