Summary
The thing about surviving the end of the world was that you were supposed to feel relieved.
Mike was pulling away and Will felt like he was losing a piece of himself. But things aren't always what they seem.
Mike was gutted at what he was doing. But he had no choice.
"Tomorrow, he would start pulling away. Tomorrow, he would begin the process of creating distance. Tomorrow, he would break both their hearts to keep them both safe." -

Summary
Robin shifted her weight, glancing between them. Her fingers drummed against the glass bottle—tap tap tap, a nervous rhythm. "So... do you know something?"
Nancy's head snapped toward her. Their eyes met, and she saw it—recognition. Shared understanding. The weight of carrying someone else's secret pressed between them like a physical thing. "Do you know something?"
"I might know something," Robin said slowly, drawing out each word like she was testing their weight. Her leg started bouncing—that nervous tell Nancy had learned to recognize over the past few years of working together while they saved the world, and then here, preparing for the end of the world. "Do you know something?"
"I might know something," Nancy admitted, and felt her pulse pick up speed, felt heat creeping up her neck. -

Summary
Mike knows Will better he knows than himself. When his best friend starts acting strange, intending to help, he's the first to directly interfere with the Vecna's plans.
or
Will, after revealing he doesn't like girls, notices one Mike suspiciously hopeful wanting to get closer.
"When we were little, I said we'd go crazy together," Mike reminded him, leaning in gently to get close and bump their elbows. "And Will... I know I would never promise that to just a friend."

Summary
Illuminated by the shadowy bathroom light, Will’s jaw tightened, soap encircling his head like a halo. Not an angel. More.
His eyes darkened, only a touch, and in them Mike saw the boy from the battlefield return. There was a fire behind his gaze, the kind that could break limbs and bring warriors to their knees. Mike wanted more of it.
Will discover his powers, and it unearths something within Mike. Something that can’t be forgotten.

Summary
He was happy for Will. He was. He wanted Will to have someone. Someone who made him smile like that, even if it hurt to look at. Even if it made something ugly and sharp crawl around inside Mike’s chest.
Because this wasn’t about Mike.
This was about Will finally being honest. Being able to be himself.
And Mike was going to be okay with it.
He had to be.
💕💕💕💕
After Will comes out, Mike is completely, totally, absolutely fine about it.
Except for the part where he’s weirdly upset about Will having a crush on Lucas.
And the part where he can’t stop thinking about Will.
And the part where everything finally clicks.

Summary
“I- I don’t like girls.”
Mike freezes in the doorway and feels the air catch in his lungs. Whether that’s on purpose or not, he’s unaware. Maybe blocking his airway is his body's way of doing him a favor, making him invisible to this conversation that he was very much not invited to. He takes a stumbling step back as quietly as he possibly can, which is difficult in his growing state of panic. He needs to make his escape immediately before being spotted, but all too soon, it’s too late. Joyce redirects her gaze to the doorway at the sound of his shuffling footsteps, and the shock in her expression inevitably prompts his best friend to turn around.

Alternatively, a rewrite starting at the coming out scene and attempting to implement my favorite fan theories and fix the hot mess the Duffer Brothers created.

Summary
“Also, if I might remind you, we are all actively going through hell—I think I’m allowed to look like shit.”
“Now, I didn’t say all that!” Mike protests immediately, so overexaggerated that it cannot be entirely serious. “You don’t look like shit—quite the opposite, actually.”
Will stumbles immediately, and Mike catches him, because of course he does.
A military base is burning down behind them, casting everything in a golden glow that could perhaps even count as romantic were it not for the circumstances it came to be in the first place, adding a blurry, near-dreamlike quality to the air, and he stumbles like an idiot, and Mike catches him around the waist as if this were some romantic comedy.
Maybe he didn’t do shit back there, in actuality, and got ripped apart by a demogorgon limb by limb, died and ascended, because surely Mike didn’t just say—
“The—opposite?”
“Yeah,” Mike says, unrepentant, straightening him up and continuing like nothing is off about this line of conversation at all. “The blood is quite a good look on you.”
