His eyes flew open in shock and his body tensed, he hadn’t even realized what he had done. “Forgive me!” His fear wasn’t that of a punishment, but of failing her. He couldn’t bear the thought of failing her.

Hancock raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "-You want to learn how to handle a blade?" He examined her for a moment, trying to get a read on her. Difficult as always. Phoenix had remained a bit of a mystery to him, her past a well guarded secret and with an aura of fuck around and find out about her. But if you looked closely, you could discern something just beneath the surface, something feral. Like a hurt animal, the most dangerous kind to back into a corner.
But this was different. There was a still determination in her eyes that he hadn't seen before. Phoenix swallowed hard, her voice resolute. "-Yeah. I wanna learn."
Hancock looked at her, twirling his knife once more before sheathing it. “-Well then. No time like the present.”

Summary
Steve snorts and shakes his head, but he does seem satisfied with Eddie’s assumption. Eddie doesn’t tell him all the other things that Steve’s choice revealed to him. That he’s a romantic at heart, longing for something, something to fill that emptiness in his heart.
It makes Eddie’s hands tingle with the desire to reach out. To soothe some of the ache.
Not that he has any illusion that he could.
Instead, he turns up the radio and watches the brown leaves pass them by, imagining Steve happy and full of sunshine in California. Wonders who would be by his side when he’s not lonely anymore.
OR Eddie needs a ride to Indy for a concert. Steve just wants somebody to spend the day with him, so he won't feel so lonely. -

He can’t fathom why his underarms are prickling with sweat, can’t imagine why his dick seems to be finding interest in this conversation. He crosses an ankle over his knee, readjusts his jeans. He can feel Eddie watching him closely, can’t quite meet the guys all-consuming gaze.
